Nutrition For Troubled Eyes

If you can see this - be GRATEFUL!

Preserve, Protect and Support your Eyes - those wonderful windows on the world.

The eyes are specialized organs.  They exist as part of the body. They require the same broad-spectrum nutrients that the body needs.   It is very important that you support the marvelous biochemical factory called your body with daily coverage of ALL of its nutritional needs.

Ultra Vites  provides many of the nutrients that have been shown by studies to improve vision.   The body needs all of the ingredients in Ultra Vites in order to maintain health.  It contains 25 key nutrients, such as an optimal blend of all 8 of the B Vitamins.  Ultra Vites also contains macro and micro minerals in a bioavailable form.  It contains the anti oxidants Vitamin C and Vitamin E which studies have shown protect the eye.

In addition, the following nutrients in Ultra Vites have been shown to be important for various eye health concerns:
  • Vitamin A benefits (but not  beta carotene because it interferes with the xanthophylls): Prevent night blindness.  Prevent dry eye.  Prevent moderate to severe loss of color vision.
  • Vitamin D: studies have shown that the high intake of vitamin D lessened the chances of developing or slowed the progression of macular degeneration.  Another study showed an improvement in myopia when Vitamin D was  used with high doses of calcium
  • Folic acid and B12: these two vitamins play an active role in transmethylation, which is critical to proper macular function.
Note:  Many people have a genetic inability to convert Folate and / or B12 into their active forms.  Using Ultra Vites ensures their availability.
  • Magnesium: 78% of all retinal cellular action requires magnesium.
  • Selenium has a long history of being a potent anti oxidant, and has been shown to be helpful in preventing macular degeneration
  • Zinc has been proven to decrease the incidence and progression of macular degeneration.
The most important and simplest way to protect your eyes is to use devices such as eye guards and sunglasses.  You should get regular eye check ups,  Note: the eye is one of the most demanding organs in the body.  Use Essential Fatty Acids, Vitamins and Minerals daily.

Ultra Vision: provides Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Vitamin C:  These are nutrients that specifically support your Macula

VeinTonic: Since nutrients have to be pumped into the eye, Herbs that have been shown to protect the integrity of your veins should be considered.

Rutin:  Enjoy the many anti oxidant benefits of this powerful Bioflavonoid

No More FISHY Burps!

Not Just Fish Oil | Best Omega Blend

You have known for years how effective and beneficial fish oil is - especially the cold water, deep water fish.

DID YOU KNOW?  Fish Oil is incomplete!   It only has 2 of the 3 PREformed, essential fatty acids.

FACT:Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) are, well, essential.  The body has to have them.  Nothing else you eat will provide them.   You can liken EFAs to the air you breathe.

FACT: We use Wild Alaskan Salmon from protected American fisheries.
  • high EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is heart healthy
  • high DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) supports your brain
FACT: Black Currant seed oil provides GLA.  GLA is an omega 6 essential fatty acid that is not a part of our Western diets.
  • high SDA (stearidonic acid), present in Black Currant seed oil,  provides more EPA
  • high GLA (gamma linolenic acid) reduces inflammation  Read More
FACT:  It is likely that you are eating the typical Western diet.  Did you know that it is characterized by an excess of Arachidonic Acid (AA).  AA is an omega 6 fatty acid that causes inflammation.  AA is the reason you are sore and achy.  GLA supresses this inflammatory process.  Check out the Anti Inflammatory miracle that is Gamma Linolenic Acid
These four Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) affect every cell in you body.  They affect your hair and nails, your skin and everything inside.
    http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-618-ultra-omega-linic-best-omega-blend.aspx
  • Doctors most often recommend EFAs for your heart.  EFAs improve the HDL:LDL cholesterol levels, make your blood cells 'less sticky', improve your blood pressure, and generally improve your cardiovascular health.
  • EFA's are critically important to your brain.  Did you know that DHA supports structure.  For those with Alzheimer's, for instance, the brain shrinks.  The EPA affects function.   Question:  how well are you thinking today?
  • EPA has been shown to improve Schizophrenia and Bipolar depression
  • Arthritis:  GLA, along with EPA and DHA, are particularly important for those with Arthritis - ANY KIND of Arthritis!.  GLA is anti inflammatory.  More on help for Arthritis - DHA helps prevent joint deformation.  EPA keeps everything moving.
  • Dr Jones' patients with Arthritis do especially well on Ultra Omega-Linic.  Ultra Omega-Linic (aka Opti-PUFA) is Samolinic - updated and improved.
Did you know?
It is critically important that pregnant or nursing Mothers supplement with Ultra Omega-Linic.  This is because your baby is developing very rapidly.  Your baby will steal these important nutrients from you!  If your stores are low, the baby may not have enough of what it needs.  Postpartum depression is a fairly common problem for new mothers.  David Horrobin pointed out that a pregnant mom could lose as much as 10% of her brain weight.

Did you know?
Yes, you can use other oils, like Flax seed oil, and olive oil.  You can eat lots of nuts, like wonderful walnuts (and other fatty acid sources).  BUT (there always has to be a BUT), there is the problem of converting these 'parent' oils into the prostaglandins - which do the work at the cellular level.  There are metabolic enzyme steps along the way (they alter the fatty acid chains).  For the very young, the very old, the very ill, these metabolic steps simply fail.  In addition, these enzyme steps require that specific vitamins and mineral be present.  if they are missing, no conversion takes place.  Download the EFA Flow Chart for more detail.

http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-190-a-basic-package-the-essentials.aspx      While your supermarket may sell products high in Omega 3, which is good, you really also need the PUFAs. For this reason it is important to provide the PREformed, polyUnsaturated, Essential Fatty Acids, as are present in Ultra Omega-Linic.  In addition you need a multi vitamin supplement that covers the minimum daily needs.  Ultra Vites provides the vitamins and minerals you must have to support the metabolic conversion to prostaglandins.

How Much Ultra Omega-Linic should you take each day?  And for how long?
My sassy answer is that I don't eat fish 3 times a day - like the early Alaskans did.  I don't eat fish 3 times a week - and i may not eat it 3 times a month.  And if I do eat fish, I like it battered, deep fried and dredged in tartar sauce.  Bad me!

Young, healthy people need a minimum of two softgels of Ultra Omega-Linic per day.  For those with any kind of Arthritis, or any of joint deterioration related conditions, he recommends 8 per day.  Some folks have pain relief at a lower dose, and some need more.  The daily recommendation for Ultra Vites is 2 per day.  Since both Ultra Omega-Linic and Ultra Vites provide essential nutrients, you should consume them every day.

What is Ultra Omega-Linic good for?
The short list is: heart (blood pressure and more), brain (senile dementia, Alzheimer's), skin, hair, pain (any kind of arthritis), energy, and just about anything else you can think of.  Years and thousands of studies support the need for these nutrients .

Does the fish matter?
One study Dr Jones read several years ago indicated that a group of heart patients fed fish had a worsening of their condition.  Getting into the study he discovered that the group that did poorly was fed fish from one of the most contaminated parts of the ocean.  Ergo - the results were not surprising considering the amount of toxins delivered.  By the way, did you know that pregnant women in Hawaii are discouraged from eating the local fish?  Hmmmm...

Our very Pure and Contaminant FREE fish is assayed for pollutants and radiation.  In addition, the fish protein is filtered out - hence no fishy burps.

If you are still not sure: Myths, Misconceptions and Facts -  'Fats are Important to your Health'.

Do you think it is important to take a fish oil supplement?

Do you take one now that makes you burp?

Information about the fish oil used in Ultra Omega-Linic

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-618-ultra-omega-linic-best-omega-blend.aspx

We use wild Alaska Fish Oil in Ultra Omega-Linic

The Wild Alaska Salmon is caught in Alaskan waters by a certified Alaskan fishery. Neither the Salmon oil nor the concentrated Fish oil used in this product contains any protein. It has been filtered out. The product is analyzed for contaminants such as heavy metals, radiation and organic pollutants, and is guaranteed to exceed federal safety standards.

For thousands of years, the fish of Alaska's seas and rivers have supported human use  from fisheries used by Alaska's indigenous native peoples since prehistoric times. It has evolved into today's modern seafood industry. Alaska is home to abundant stocks of many species of fish, and offers some of the cleanest marine, freshwater, and upland habitats in the world.

Effective state and federal institutions manage fisheries that are productive and sustainable, clean and healthy. Alaska is the only State in the nation whose Constitution explicitly mandates that all fish, including salmon, shall be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle. Alaska is thousands of miles away from large sources of pollution that can contaminate the human food supply in other parts of the world. These distances, combined with the earth's patterns of circulation of water and air, help to ensure that Alaska's own waters are among the cleanest in the world.

Alaska's human population density is among the lowest of any in the United States, and lower than most places in the world. Alaska has little heavy industry, and has strict regulations governing development activities, such as road building, mining, logging, and sewage treatment. The State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) has a regulatory section dealing specifically with water quality. Water discharges, such as sewage and other potential pollutants, are closely regulated to ensure high water quality. In addition, ADFG requires prior approval for any in-stream construction activities in Alaska's salmon streams through the authority of the Alaska statutes known as the "Anadromous Fish Act" (Alaska Statute 16.05.870). Alaska also has a Forest Practices Act requiring buffer zones from logging along salmon streams to prevent erosion and protect spawning and rearing habitat. Clean marine habitats produce pure seafood products, pure and remarkably free of contamination by pesticides, petroleum derivatives, PCBs, heavy metals, and bacteria.

Are you making yourself sick?

There are some things You Need to Know if You Are Taking Drugs, and/or Nutritional Supplements, and/or Herbal Products.

written by John W Jones, MD, MPH and Marilyn Sidwell

Drugs, Herbs, Vitamins, Minerals, Pills
Know the Facts:

  • Supplements can interact with each other
  • Supplements can interact with medications and herbs
  • Medications can interact with herbs and supplements

More Facts:

  • For optimum benefit, all nutrients must be present and in balance. See my Minimum Recommendations
  • Very high levels of fat soluble nutrients such as vitamins A or D can reach toxic levels
  • All the minerals need to be balanced, and high levels of certain minerals such as selenium can reach toxic levels
  • B vitamins are generally safe, but should be used in balance. High levels of vitamin B6, for example, can cause neurologic symptoms and problems.
  • High levels of Folic Acid can mask a B12 deficiency. Ultra Vites, Ultra Preventive and Ultra Preventive + Iron contain 1000 mcg of Vitamin B12 to balance Folic Acid.
  • Supplements and drugs can work synergistically, but they  can have adverse reactions as well as good results.
Example of a good result: the use of a probiotic with antibiotics can decrease the instance of diarrhea and colon irritation that can be caused by the use of broad spectrum antibiotics.

Example of a bad result: the action of some nutrients can interfere with some drugs used for chemotherapy.

A qualified health care provider should evaluate your nutritional needs and coordinate a nutritional program with other health considerations.

Drugs and Nutrients Interact.

For example, Statin drugs reduce the formation of coenzyme Q10.

Nutrients interact with Nutrients

A vitamin or a mineral should not be used by itself.  For instance, when high levels of zinc are used it needs to be balanced with copper and other minerals.   Use a balanced multi such as Ultra Vites before using a high level of an individual nutrient.

The effects of high levels of supplements needs to be evaluated.  Example: High levels of calcium can suppress the absorption of magnesium and zinc

Common Misconceptions about nutrients

Common misconception #1: herbs are natural, therefore safe. Herbs represent a body of knowledge unto themselves. They have been used for centuries to help people solve many health problems.  Herbal lore attributes different properties to different parts of plants, and many herbs operate synergistically with other herbs and nutrients.

Be aware that there can be adverse reactions to herbs.  In addition, there are herb/herb, herb/drug and herb/nutrient interaction problems.

Common misconception #2: herbs must be standardized. Standardizing means manipulating an herb so that it contains a guaranteed amount of a certain botanical constituent. Plants are extremely complex chemically, containing hundreds to thousands of constituents. The majority of plant constituents have yet to be identified or understood by modern science. It is the synergy of the various constituents that is responsible for the medicinal activity of herbs

Read “The Standardization of Herbs” from Time Labs.

Common Misconception #3:  your doctor knows what you are taking (medicines and supplements) and knows your complete health history.

Here are some take-charge suggestions for you:
  • Make a list of all your doctors
  • Make sure that all of your doctors have a complete list of all of your medications, herbs and nutrients
  • Record the major Health events in your life

More Suggestions

Discuss everything you are taking with your qualified health care provider or pharmacist. People taking 6 or more daily medications are more likely to have a negative drug reaction. It is especially important that you learn the consequences of taking multiple drugs as well as potential drug/drug adverse reactions.

Learn the effects, good and bad, of all the medications. Do read the information that comes with the prescription. These suggestions are from an article in USA Weekend, Jan 21-23, 2005. “Raise your Prescription IQ”
  • List every pill (medications, vitamins, herbs, etc), cream and ointment
  • Visit a pharmacist or doctor to review this list
  • Side effects can mimic many things, such as signs of aging
  • Drugs can Interact w/nutrients. Some nutrients can disable the effect of the drug, and some drugs can interfere with the nutrient.
Here is an example of potential problems from the most widely used prescription drug. The statin class of drugs, such as Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol or Crestor are commonly used to control hyperlipidemia. Statin drugs are HMG Co-A reductase inhibitors and can reduce the formation of CoQ10.   The use of Ultra CoQ10-100 can minimize this reaction. Where the statin drugs lower cholesterol levels there are significant side effects affecting muscle physiology. There are noted frequent side effects from statin drugs, such as flu like symptoms, myopathy, myositis, peripheral neuropathy, and muscle wasting disease.

For more information: “The Nutritional Cost of Prescription Drugs” is a book which explains how to maintain good nutrition while using prescription drugs, and the various effects these drugs have on nutrition.
  • It lists the drugs and shows how they can affect nutrients.
  • Then it lists nutrients and show which drugs affect them.
Paperback, by Ross Pelton, R.Ph. and James B. LaVelle, R.Ph.

“Prescription Drugs and Vitamin Depletion” from Blue Cross of Idaho had an interesting article in one of their publications several years ago; It started out by saying: “Some medications may affect the storage and absorption of vital nutrients you need to stay healthy.  For the most part, prescription medications do not have this affect on the body unless they are taken at high doses for long periods of time (emphasis mine). However, some medications can deprive your body of specific vitamins/minerals at any dose.”

Well Said!

Is there more than one type of Diabetes?

by John W. Jones, MD, MPH
Nutritional Consultant, Nutrition Pure and Simple

Did you Know?  There are three types of diabetes  -  and a fourth type is now recognized.
Did you Know?   Simple lifestyle changes can reverse or minimize Diabetes
Did you Know?   About the Big Vitamin D Mistake?  Implications for Type 1 Diabetes...

Gestational Diabetes. The increase of hormones during pregnancy may cause Insulin resistance and elevated blood sugar.  I strongly advise you to choose low carbohydrate foods if you are pregnant.   It is most important that you minimize sugar intake.  In addition, you need the essential fatty acids in Ultra Omega-Linic and the readily available nutrients in Ultra Vites because both mother and baby have much higher than usual nutritional needs.

Type I Diabetes:  AKA 'juvenile diabetes'.   Type I begins with a decrease of insulin caused by a loss of the cells that produce insulin.  When this happens you need to supply insulin and monitor blood sugar levels carefully.  You hear a lot about diets - and I know it can be confusing.  FACT:  A low carbohydrate or ketogenc diet will aid in the control of blood sugar levels. This leads to easier insulin management.

Type II Diabetes is hereditary.  Look to your family for the first clue that you might develop a blood sugar problem..  Type II diabetes is a resistance to insulin at the cellular level.   If this continues, the  pancreas will be unable to make enough Insulin.  Glucose will build up in the blood stream and tissues.  Eventually you will be faced with a variety of potential problems: neurological, cardiovascular, kidney, vision problems and/or early death.

Did you know?  It may be possible to prevent or reverse the progression of Type II Diabetes?  You CAN stop insulin resistance from becoming uncontrolled Diabetes.   The Key is early recognition and early defensive action. The longer you wait the harder diabetes is to control.  More health complications are likely.

Once called 'borderline diabetes', the new term for 'early diagnosis' is 'PRE' Diabetes.  What you need to know about PreDiabetes is that you CAN keep it that way.  You simply decide you will make the necessary lifestyle changes.

Type III Diabetes,  Recent investigations show that insulin is produced by a healthy brain.  In Alzheimer's disease the brain loses its ability to produce insulin and becomes insulin resistant.   As a consequence brain cells start to die.

Did you know?  This death can be prevented if ketones are available!  The brain cells can use Ketones instead of glucose as an energy source.   Medium chain triglycerides provide keytones in the body.   Ultra Monolaurin is a 90% pure distillate of medium chain fatty acids from coconut oil.

As a result of recent studies, the heartbreaking symptoms of Senile dementia and Alzheimer's are now being identified as Type III Diabetes.  These conditions mainly affect the aging population.  These conditions are preventable - and may be reversible.
Did you know:  Nutrition can protect the brain?

I found this additional thought: Is cancer a type of diabetes?
There is a strong link between diabetes and different types of cancer.  Type I diabetes tends to occur with cervical and stomach cancers.  Type II diabetes often occurs with breast, endometrial, pancreatic, liver, kidney and colon cancers.  It is important to properly manage diabetes during cancer treatment.

Cancer and the Ketogenic Diet

DIABETES FACTS

When you digest carbohydrates and simple sugars they become glucose.  Glucose is the major source of energy for your body.  Sugar enters your cells as glucose and is utilized by the action of Insulin.  The diagnosis of Diabetes means your glucose (sugar) levels are too high.

THREE SIMPLE STEPS TO PREVENT DIABETES

  1. The most important step you can take is to minimize or eliminate high carbohydrate foods, like potatoes and sweet (high carbohydrate) foods. The low carbohydrate lifestyle approach to eating is VERY important to diabetics.   This diet may help you maintain insulin levels without injecting insulin.  If insulin is needed, it may possible to minimize the daily dose.   CAUTION - if you are on a daily does of insulin.  The first day you lower carbohydrates and sugar intake  you may experience a decrease in your insulin needs.

  2. Exercise is another important step.  The amount of exercise per week that experts recommend is dependent on your age and general health.   Exercise also helps you maintain optimal weight and function

  3. Weight loss may also be essential, especially if you have a high BMI* index.  BMI index provides and indicator of body fat.  Visit the BMI calculator to check how you are doing.
WEIGHT LOSS

Check the label on all manufactured foods.  For this purpose the amount of net Carbohydrate is more important than the Calorie count.   To check the carbohydrate content of a food (one without a label), visit SelfNutriton and enter the food in the search box.  Subtract the fiber from the carbohydrate listing.

For the purpose of weight loss you need the net carb count to be around 20 gm per day.  40 gm per day is optimal to maintain weight.
Taking these simple steps will lower the glucose impact on the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin.  This will preserve and perhaps prolong their function.  Since the destruction of these cells is not reversible, the sooner you take action the better.

IS DIABETES A PROBLEM?

Diabetes affects a large part of the population.  It affects people of all ages.  Many of the young people who are overweight will progress to Type II Diabetes.  Type II Diabetes is also associated with the use of many medications, such as Statin drugs.  Check with your pharmacist for potential side effects of ANY medication you may be taking.

Common sources of carbohydrate are sweets, many vegetables (potatoes are high, turnips are low), bread and pasta.   You can find good tasting entrees, dessert and other recipes at jjConsulting.net.   I have suggestions for foods that satisfy your desire for ‘sweets’.  Be careful with sugar substitutes (as opposed to other sweeteners - like Stevia).  Aspartame is a sugar substitute that is responsible for many neurologic problems.  See the BLOG:  ‘Aspartame - sweet Poison’.  I will share a secret with you:  sugary foods make you hungry.  Fatty foods are filling.

Ok, so you have decided to avoid sugary drinks.  Now you focus on healthy drinks, like orange juice.  Do you know how much sugar (carbohydrate) is in that glass of OJ?   You can find out HERE.  The very best way is to check the label on what YOU drink.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-190-a-basic-package-the-essentials.aspx
See my nutritional protocol for ‘Diabetes’.  At a minimum, if you are eating the typical Western diet you need a complete multi vitamin/mineral supplement like Ultra VitesUltra Omega-Linic essential fatty acids are, well, ESSENTIAL.  If you have Diabetes, or if you have a family history of Diabetes, I strongly urge you to follow these diet, nutritional supplements and exercise recommendations.

*BMI index is a ratio of body weight to height with age calculated into the results.  It provides an indicator of body fat. Visit the BMI calculator to check how you are doing!

SIDE EFFECTS?

Absolutely!  A better body weight.  More energy.  Less (or no) insulin.

In Summary

Food choices that favor ketones help all types of Diabetes.
•    use coconut oil and other fats (avoid processed vegetable oils)
•    make low carbohydrate / low glycemic food choices
•    choose high protein foods like meat, fowl, fish, nuts and eggs

Spirulina | Coping with radiation in daily living.

By John W Jones, MD, MPH
Nutritional Consultant for Nutrition Pure and Simple

Many people have concerns about radiation. News about radiation from Japan's nuclear reactor deepens this concern. You may be unnecessarily worried. This paper discusses ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. We present useful nutritional information to help you cope with small and large exposures of radiation.

Ionizing radiation consists of particles or electromagnetic waves that are energetic enough to detach electrons from atoms or molecules, thus ionizing them. Its effect is mutagenic. Ionizing radiation is used in medical applications.

Non-ionizing radiation refers to any type of radiation that does not carry enough energy to ionize. Non-Ionizing radiation can produce burns, but is not mutagenic

Natural background radiation of both types is present everywhere.  Some radiation you ignore.  Cell phones, microwave ovens, smoking and food are examples. Some radiation exposure can cause potential problems.  CAT scans and other radiographic studies, mammograms, dental and bone scan tests are common.  Airport body scanners are a hazard for frequent fliers.

These sources, both ionizing and non-ionizing, have the potential of being a greater problem as the incidence and proximity of exposure increases. In other words, you have more likelihood of damage from daily living exposure than from a nuclear disaster accident.

If you are very old, very young or in poor health you are most at risk from radiation.   Pregnant mothers risk their babies.  Problems from exposure to radiation vary according to the your health.   So what can you do?  Stay as healthy as you possibly can .

Here is a Nutritional approach to minimize damage from radiation exposure.
The simple thing to do is follow my Basic Protocol. It has been developed to supply the optimal nutrients needed by the body on a daily basis.

  1. Ultra Vites - I Formulated this Multi to provide a high level of readily available minerals as well as B Vitamins and antioxidants. It is designed to keep the body well mineralized. This presents less opportunity for radioactive minerals to be absorbed. Note: Ultra-Preventive Multi Vitamin Mineral combines all the features of Ultra Vites, plus it includes 1.1 grams of Spirulina. See #5 for more information on Spirulina.
  2. Ultra Omega-Linic - I designed this essential fatty acid product for its anti inflammatory properties. It supplies the fatty acids necessary to keep cell membranes functional. Essential because the body cannot make them - they MUST be supplied. Our Wild Salmon oil is from the protected waters of Alaskan fisheries and are assayed for heavy metals and toxins and radiation.
  3. Extra Calcium (Calcium D Chelate) keeps optimal calcium levels in the bones, thus protecting them from the uptake of radioactive ions.
  4. Argiletz French Green Illite Clay is the only one that has been approved for food use by the French National Health Superior Counsel for internal use. Its main properties are that it is Adsorbent, Absorbent, Purifying and Calming. Green clays are curative volcanic ashes that detoxify and restore mineral balance. This Illite clay contains only natural materials treated mechanically without any chemical additives. As a bacteria-destroying agent it can render contaminated water innocuous. When ingested, it travels along the digestive tract eliminating toxic agents and harmful bacteria.
  5. PhytoGreen Drink powder uses Organic Earthrise™ Spirulina. Earthrise™ Spirulina studies on the children exposed after the Chernoble accident showed a 50% decrease in radioactive elements. Spirulina also stimulates recovery of white blood cells and bone marrow counts.
  6. Spirulina Caps - each 6 capsules provide 3.24 g Spirulina Natural® Earthrise™ Spirulina.

Digestion: Your KEY to Good Health

Question: What is supposed to happen when you eat food?

by Marilyn Sidwell Jones
Download the PDF

In the Beginning ...

“They” say you are supposed to gather as a happy family to enjoy your meal.   I know - that rarely happens.   It is difficult to leave worries and disputes at the door.  But emotions at mealtime are very important.  You can have a dramatic effect on successful digestion with a peaceful setting, a happy or a meditative mood.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/t-digestionProtocol.aspx
Do you remember your mother telling you to ‘slow down and chew your food’?
Chewing your food is the first ‘key’ step in the digestion of food..  Enjoy the textures and aromas presented by food.  Chewing mixes food with saliva, which contains enzymes that start carbohydrate digestion.  Chewing breaks food into small pieces.  This oral phase of digestion, with its smells and tangs, stimulates the stomach and pancreas to prepare for the next step in digestion.

When you swallow food you keep it in your stomach for an hour or two.  A healthy stomach should drop to a pH of about two; it mixes the food with hydrochloric acid and pepsin.  The result of this process is called chime.  This mixing begins the process of digesting proteins.  The carbohydrate digestion that began in the mouth is stopped by the acid.    The stomach acid helps defend the body against any unwanted harmful bacteria that arrived with the food.

After an hour or two the stomach contents feed into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.  Secretions of bicarbonate from the pancreas buffer the acid contents. The pancreas also secretes pancreatic enzymes.  These digest carbohydrates, protein and fats. The liver secretes bile salts, which emulsifies the fats to aid in their absorption. The bile salts are stored in the gallbladder until they are needed.

Peristalsis is a phenomenon whereby the food is propelled along the gastro-intestinal (GI ) tract.   The small intestine contains small finger-like projections called villi.  Carbohydrates, proteins, water-soluble vitamins, and minerals are absorbed from the GI tract by the villi during this process.  The minerals are transported across the GI tract at specific sites, and their absorption is pH dependent.  Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption.

Fat-soluble nutrients and fat, using the bile salts, are absorbed in the last third of the small intestine, the ilium.  Next, everything is propelled into the colon where it is acted upon by intestinal bacteria.  Bacteria in the intestines play a major role in the body’s defense.  In fact, the normal flora and fauna of the GI tract fulfill many useful functions.  Bacteria break down any undigested molecules.  GI bacteria stimulate cell growth.  They repress the growth of harmful organisms.  All of this trains your immune system to respond only to pathogens, and promotes the body’s defense against many diseases.   Fluid is absorbed at this stage.  The contents are thus concentrated and finally excreted from the body.

...  In a nutshell

A healthy digestive system depends on proper operation at each phase.  Yes, proper food choices are important.  At the same time, food must be digested and absorbed from the GI tract into the body.  Then the products of digestion must be transported to the appropriate working sites (cells).  During the next step molecules must be picked up by the cells, used by them and properly exited from them. Debris is next picked up to be excreted.  Proper excretion varies, depending on whether debris is exhaled by the lungs, sweated out thru the skin, sent out via urine or excreted from the colon.

...  when things go wrong (and they probably will)

You know things can and do go wrong with any and all phases of digestion.   What follows is a greatly simplified description of problems and solutions.      Are burping, heartburn, flatulence, constipation or diarrhea normal?  NO!

What happens when things go wrong?

People enjoying the typical Western diet are famous for making poor food choices.  That is one (very serious) problem.  Unfortunately these food choices often include foods which cause GI distress.  Older people as a group do not chew well.  Busy people have a bad habit of bolting their food as fast as possible.  These ‘events’ start a cascade of malfunctions.

Older folks and very allergic people are likely to have very little stomach acid.  One consequence of a deficiency of stomach acid is acid reflux.  That’s right.  Acid reflux or GERDS  is more likely a result of too little rather than too much stomach acid.  The symptoms of too much and too little stomach acid are identical.  There is an easy way for you to test whether you have too much or too little stomach acid.  Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to an 8 oz glass of water.  Sip it with your meal.  If you have pain, stop drinking.  But, if the small amount of acid helps, you probably are low in hydrochloric acid.  Low stomach acid results in food remaining in the stomach well beyond the normal 2 hour stomach-emptying time.  When you lay down, the slightly acid stomach contents seep through the sphincter at the top of the stomach and creep up the slightly alkaline esophagus.  And that really BURNS.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-35-ginger-herb-41-concentrate.aspx
Ginger is very helpful if you have GERDs.  It relaxes the sphincter at the bottom of the stomach, thus allowing the stomach to empty.  Ginger has the additional benefit of increasing peristalsis along the entire GI tract.  This benefit of ginger minimizes the likelihood that the contents will collect in pockets and folds, putrefy and cause gas.

Your Stomach and Ulcers

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-33-enzymes-plus-digestion.aspx
You have another potential problem when the stomach does not produce enough acid.  You could get a duodenal ulcer.  As noted above, food leaving the stomach goes into the duodenal area.  Normally low pH of the contents challenges the pancreas to secrete buffering bicarbonate.  If the chime is the wrong pH this ‘challenge’ does not take place.  Hence, you have a fertile area for acid to cause ulcers.  For these reasons we recommend Enzymes Plus.  It adds acid for your stomach.  It also adds support for the rest of the digestive breakdown steps.

The Vilus needs protection
Food is propelled along to the small intestine, then on to the large intestine.   The small villi lining the GI tract have the task of picking up the various digested nutrient molecules: carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and fats.  But what if the villi are damaged?

A better question might be: What can damage the villi so they don’t do their job?

Inflammation of the villi - from any cause - will have a bad effect on this phase of the digestive process..  Some common causes of damage to the villi are diarrhea, parasites, tropical sprue, inflammatory bowel disease, gastro enteritis, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, intolerance to any number of foods, Diabetes mellitis, malnutrition and fiber deficiency.   There is more!  There are many more causes.

The damage to intestinal mucosa and villi results in - wait for it - malnutrition.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-619-ultra-vites-now-with-active-methyl-b-vitamins.aspx
Malnutrition is very possible if  the nutrients fail to cross from the GI tract into the blood stream.  If they successfully cross the first barrier,  the molecules need to be transported to the various sites of action where the body does its work.  This is why we rely so heavily on  Ultra Vites.  The minerals are ‘smuggled’ into the body as amino acids (chelates) and the B-Vitamins are already in their active forms.  In other words, once your body heat dissolves the capsule, the nutrients are available for pick up, and ready for use.

The next step, after the molecules are transported across, can also be problematic.  The mechanisms the body uses to transport nutrients are very exact.  Specific carriers are needed to transport a mineral, such as iron, to the site of action by the cells.  This is a very technical and very important phase of the transport process.  Nutritional deficiencies can be traced to malfunctions of delivery.  But, after delivery to the cell, a particular molecule must cross the cell wall, and its waste products must be picked up for transport for excretion.

Fats & Fatty Acids
http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-618-ultra-omega-linic-best-omega-blend.aspx
What is all the noise about ‘essential’ fatty acids?  The body will use whatever fats you give it for one of its major functions - the building of cell walls.  If you give it the wrong building materials the cell will not function correctly to take up nutrients and expel waste.  The fish oil and black currant seed oil in Ultra Omega Liniic provide the correct fatty acid molecules needed to build the cells so they function properly.

Probiotics
We have written a lot about the need for probiotics.  The ‘helpful’ bacteria that live in your GI tract are susceptible to a number of damaging events.  Did you know that the herbicides used on GM foods, will kill your gut bacteria (even though Monsanto has ‘proven’ that its Roundup does not harm humans)?  Did you know that anti-biotics will kill both bad and helpful bacteria in the GI tract?  Did you know that constipation and diarrhea are both signs that your good bacteria are dying?  The lack of good bacteria in the GI tract points towards Autoimmune disease, Non-Alcoholic fatty liver disease, Parkinson’s disease - and many other ‘popular’ health problems.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-650-ultra-4x6-probiotic.aspx
Our Ultra 4x6 Probiotic formula has the following beneficial bacteria:
  • Lactobacillus acidophillus DDS-1 is the studied and patented organism that is stomach acid and bile resistant.  It has been shown to inhibit Heliobacter pylori - and has many other proven benefits.
  • Lactobacillus paracasei is found mostly in the small intestine.  One of its benefits is that it improves immune function.
  • Lactobacillus bulgaricus helps with the digestion of dairy products.  It also has anti-cancer properties.
  • Streptococcus thermophilus is particularly helpful in easing the symptoms of lactose intolerance.
    •    Bifidobacterium bifidum is found in the intestines in large numbers.  It helps detoxify the intestines and promotes regular bowel movements.
  • Bifidobacterium longum inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria.  It prevents diarrhea and aids in cancer prevention.
  • Inulin is a prebiotic.  It is a naturally-occurring polysaccharide that is resistant to digestion.  Inulin promotes the colonization of beneficial bacteria.  They help maintain the mucosa barrier in the GI tract.

Prevent many ‘modern’ ailments

We offer a number of Natural Solutions (alternatives to OTC remedies)  that benefit your digestion - and your overall health.
  1. Enzymes Plus is a digestive aid that will benefit all phases of the digestive process

What do Restless Legs, PMS, Anxiety and Osteoporosis have in common?

These problems can be indicators that you need Magnesium.  Ultra Magnesium Chelate delivers 250 mg Magnesium

Is Magnesium important, you may ask?

Research shows that Magnesium may be the most important of all the minerals.  You need it for energy metabolism.  Do you have cramps?  your muscles need Magnesium.  Your nervous system need Magnesium.  In fact, all of the cells in your body use Magnesium.  Over 300 enzyme actions use Magnesium.  Magnesium is important for men, for athletes, for pregnant women, for young people, old people and everyone in between.

Magnesium in food

Here are a few of the Magnesium-rich foods: Nuts (raw), dark Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, fish, whole grains, avocados, bananas, and dark chocolate.  The irony of dark chocolate is that you have to be careful you don't negate its benefits with an equal amount of sugar.

Do you want to know the Magnesium value of your food?  Check here: http://nutritiondata.self.com/

PS - the recommended Daily Value for Magnesium is 400 mg

Is it likely that you have a deficiency of Magnesium?   Yes, You Could Be deficient!

  • Because it is water soluble, most Magnesium is lost in cooking.  More correctly, it is thrown out with the water used for cooking.
  • Most nutritional supplements contain very little Magnesium
  • Muscle cramps, aches and pains are reliable indicators of Magnesium deficiency

Ultra Magnesium Chelate provides the most reliable absorption of any form of oral magnesium.  Magnesium oral salts often cause diarrhea.  The addition of slippery elm in our product gives added protection to your gastro-intestinal (GI) tract.  In other words, it won't upset your stomach.

What is a chelated mineral, you may ask?

A chelate is a mineral ion that is attached to an amino acid.  This 'delivery system' has many benefits:

  • A mineral chelate is not absorbed as an ion, but carried or “smuggled” into the body attached to an amino acid
  • It is absorbed in the upper part of your small intestine as an amino acid.  The mineral goes along for a free ride.  This system is 2.5 to 3 times more efficient than ionic transport of salts.  Magnesium Oxide is an example of a salt
  • Studies have shown that chelated minerals go from the point of absorption to the site of action unchanged
  • A Chelate offers the most reliable absorption.
  • This form of Magnesium doesn’t cause diarrhea
  • An Amino Acid Chelate can be taken with food or on empty stomach
  • A chelated mineral is available to the body regardless of digestive issues

Cardiac benefits

  • Do you have heart arrhythmias?  You might have low Magnesium levels
  • Magnesium promotes stronger contraction of heart muscle, which helps the heart, of course!
  • Magnesium has the ability to dilate blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure

Skeletal muscle benefits

  • Do you have restless legs syndrome?  With Ultra Magnesium chelate you may have no more leg cramps
  • With magnesium you can skip the spasm from muscles, bones & joint problems
  • With magnesium you may be able to breathe easier if you have asthma.

Other benefits with Ultra Magnesium Chelate

  • did you know you use up your Magnesium stores when you are anxious?
  • did you know that Magnesium can help calm you down when you are anxious?
  • did you know that Magnesium can help you sleep?
  • did you know that Magnesium can help you have strong, healthy bones?
  • did you know that Magnesium may help premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

You have found the great Magnesium supplement you have been looking for!

Coconut and Monolaurin

Critical Updates - Ultra Monolaurin - 9/1/15  Updated on 8/2017

On August 8, 2013 I had a discussion with Steven Lokken, DC, DABCI, Colorado  Springs CO, which I want to share with you.

Dr Lokken had been recommending our Ultra Monolaurin to his patients for about 2 years. He reports great success with a variety of health care problems. As a general rule, he recommends that his patients keep a bottle on the shelf, and at the first sign of a cold or flu symptom, take one or two scoops (1/4 tsp per scoop) that day and continue until symptoms are gone. In a day or two the symptoms are usually gone.

He has recommended it for sinus problems and general immune support. He has found that low white blood cell count respond to 3-4 scoops per day.  At the very end, he reminded me that he tells his teachers to start taking 2 scoops of Ultra Monolaurin per day for about 2 weeks before school starts. And guess what - they don’t get sick when they get exposed to whatever the kids bring to school. So I asked about the kids? He said, yes, they should start 1 or 2 scoops, too. (Smile)

We have known for years about the effectiveness of Monolaurin (the mono ester of lauric acid) for many virus conditions. It has more recently been shown to be effective against pathogenic bacteria, fungi such as candida, and it has anti protozoa activity. While this is validated by a number of studies, it is important to me to have it confirmed by a doctor who follows his patients for a long period of time using blood tests. Ps our Cinnamint toothpaste has monolaurin in it.

So what is new about Monolaurin?

How about Eat Fat - Lose Fat?

A number of recent studies show that by eating products that contain coconut you can lose weight. It seems to help control insulin resistance in type II Diabetes. When Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) are in the diet they are preferentially utilized. They usually occur as monoglycerides or triglycerides. They also increase the utilization of the long chain triglycerides - as are found in belly fat (and other places where there is unwanted fat). Ps. This effect was specifically referenced in the studies.

How can coconut do that, you may ask? This is because of the MCFAs in Coconut oil. The crystals in Ultra Monolaurin are made from coconut oil, so they contain the same MCFAs: Monolaurin and its vital medium-chain fatty acid companions, Monomyristin, Monocaprin and Monocaprylin.

There are a growing number of coconut products on the market - milk, ice cream, butter substitute, yogurt and most importantly, coconut oil. While these products can be - and are - used in place of cows milk with good results, they do provide calories. Therefore we use coconut products, coconut oil and Ultra Monolaurin to optimize the effects of the MCFAs.

Another interesting area of recent studies is the effect these MCFAs have on high energy use activities. Sports, exercise, and hard physical labor all use a lot of energy.  Dr Jones has written about the benefits of nutritional supplementation for Athletes - how it can affect (and effect) performance and help injury recovery.  NEW: MCFAs are metabolized to ketones which can be used like glucose for energy production. It is readily available.  Ultra Monolaurin should be taken before exercise for more strength and endurance.  If taken afterwards it leads to faster recovery and provides energy to prevent muscle loss.

Another area of interest is brain function when there is senile Dementia or Alzheimer’s.  Because the brain can also benefit from ketones, which are a product of MCFA metabolism, we have pointed out that Monolaurin should be considered when there is concern about senile dementia or Alzheimer’s.  That is in addition to substituting coconut oil for other fats in the diet - EXCEPT - you also need Ultra Omega-Linic because it supports brain structure and neural function.

Let me pause here and comment that adding MCFAs to the diet does NOT replace the need for the essential, PREformed, polyunsaturated long chain fatty acids.   Ultra Omega-Linic is still required to fulfill the need the body has for these ESSENTIAL fatty acids.  In fact, some of the MCFA studies showed poor results BECAUSE the EFAs were omitted from the diet.  Ultra Vites are also necessary to provide cofactors for all metabolic processes.

“Because MCT oil bypasses some digestive and absorptive processes required by the longer chain fatty acids, it provides readily available calories for people with digestive disorders.  This benefits patients with cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease and even newborn babies with malabsorption problems.  The pediatric department at the University of Louisville cautions that MCT oils do not contain the essential fatty acids required for optimal nutrition and therefore cannot be the sole source of fats in the diet.”

What IF?

What if there was an oil you could use for your daily cooking needs that would protect you from problems like heart disease or Alzheimer's?  What if that oil would improve your digestion, strengthen your immune system, protect you from infectious diseases, and help you lose excess weight?  And, by the way, you could improve your exercise, too.  Would you be interested?   That oil exists.  It is pure extra Virgin cold pressed Coconut oil.

What is less clear is how much to take!  We have, as stated above, substituted coconut oil and coconut products for as much of our daily cooking and eating needs as possible.  We also take Ultra Monolaurin.  One study we found was using the equivalent of about 10 scoops per day.  Each scoop of Ultra Monolaurin provides 750 mg monolaurin.  So about 2 ½ tsp equals about 22 grams of MCFAs.  I presume how much you might take depends on the severity of your problem and how much coconut oil is being consumed.

How much should you take?

Caution!

Begin the use Coconut oil and/or Ultra Monolaurin slowly as there is the possibility of a reaction to the die-off of unwanted organisms. Many of the articles address stomach upset, but the response may be any one of a variety of symptoms. Increase the amount used per day as symptoms subside.
To sum up our recommendations: 2 Ultra Vites per day, 2-4 Ultra Omega-Linic (or more, depending on the needs of the body) and a minimum of 1 scoop – up to perhaps 10 scoops per day Ultra Monolaurin (while substituting coconut oil and coconut products for daily cooking and eating needs)

Just when you thought you knew all about the benefits of coconut oil...

One more consideration about the use of coconut oil: because it supports the natural chemical balance of the skin it relieves dryness of skin and scalp. It can prevent wrinkles and sagging skin. Helps reduce age spots. Also helps protect the skin from damaging sun’s rays.  Many of our skin care products, like DermaCalm lotion, are made with monolaurin and coconut oil.

You can’t say this about many substances, but it is completely non-toxic and has no bad side effects - unless you happen to have an allergy to coconut.

About Nutritional Supplementation, Coconut oil and Monolaurin

By Marilyn Sidwell, owner of Nutrition Pure and Simple.
Even if a person could or would eat a perfect diet, biological diversity assures that each body has different nutritional needs. In addition, the very young, the very old and the very ill cannot get enough of the nutrients they need from the dietary intake.

Dr. Jones' recommendations for Basic Supplementation

Ultra Vites
The minimum daily requirements (MDR, RDI, RDA) have been determined so as to prevent symptoms of deficiency . They are in NO way adequate to have the body function at optimal levels, particularly considering bio-individuality, age and general health, and the use of prescription drugs that often interfere with the function of many nutrients.  Levels in our multi vitamin/mineral formulas have been researched by our medical nutritional consultant, John W Jones, MD, MPH, and their benefits have been confirmed in medical practice.

Ultra Vites is a unique multi vitamin-mineral formula.  In the truest sense of ‘simple’, our multi works for him, for her, for grandma and your teenager. And you can be sure it won’t just ‘pass right on through’.

Ultra Vites benefits

  1. Nutrient levels far exceed the minimum daily requirements - easily covering the essential nutritional bases for most healthy people.
  2. We use capsules - no fillers, no binders, no dyes
  3. It is easy for the body to absorb and use ALL the nutrients in the product
  4. There is a high level of B vitamins - high folic acid and high B12 in particular
  5. It is high in vitamin D3 - a very important nutrient that is often lacking
  6. It is high in magnesium - another nutrient often lacking
  7. And all the nutrients work synergistically to help keep the body running at peak performance
Ultra Vites2/Daypdf White PaperBuy UltraVites
A note about mineral supplementation.  Minerals presented to the body as chelates are about 2 ½ times more bioavailable than mineral salts (like calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide). It is not necessary to take them at any special time or with meals, and less is more. (Mineral Supplementation Facts)

Ultra Omega-Linic: fish oil Extraordinaire! And so much more

Is burping fish oil a problem?  It doesn't need to be.  We start with the wild Alaskan Salmon and other CLEAN deep water, cold water fish and add a special Black Currant Seed Oil.  These oils have been blended to form optimal levels of essential fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA.  They are analyzed for contaminants such as heavy metals and organic pollutants, and the product is guaranteed to exceed federal safety standards.   Neither the Salmon or the Fish Oil concentrate contains any protein for you to burp - or cause an allergic response.

Ultra Omega-Linic is PREformed Long Chain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are often recommended by doctors for a variety of heart conditions.  They can provide relief for the pain of arthritis.  Ultra Omega-Linic helps other inflammatory conditions, and is used to avoid or mitigate a variety of other health problems.  Essential fatty acids are necessary for proper development of the brain and retina of unborn babies and supplementation of pregnant women is recommended to prevent brain mass loss of the mother (postpartum depression).

Why are these fatty acids essential?  Because the body MUST have them - and can’t make the essential components from any other food.  And we don’t eat fish 3 times a day.  Black currant seed oil in Ultra Omega-Linic provides the equally important fatty acids GLA and SDA.  All of these work in concert with each other, and with the nutrients in Ultra Vites - and both products are necessary for optimal performance.

Side effects?  YES! A more beautiful YOU - noticeably prettier skin (what wrinkles?); shiny, more manageable, silky hair. Those are in addition to all the other health benefits.

Over the years this combination of fatty acids has been used by Dr Jones in his medical practice so successfully for so many problems that he laughingly calls it his ‘snake oil’.

Ultra Monolaurin

The secret disease fighter: The overuse of antibiotics is an increasing problem in modern medicine. The CDC has on ongoing program to discourage this practice.

Monolaurin is a component of mother’s milk; milk that must provide powerful disease fighting factors to sustain the infant as its own immune system develops. The exciting thing about Monolaurin is that it does not work like antibiotics, sulfa drugs, anti-viral, anti-protozoa or anti-fungal agents. It works directly on the lipid envelope coat of the virus, preventing attachment to susceptible host cells. It is non toxic to humans.

The 'ketogenic' diet - what is old is new again

By John W Jones, MD
6/2017
In the 1960's, while serving as Flight Surgeon at the SAC base, Mt Home, ID, we kept our pilots at 'flying weight' using what was laughingly known as 'the drinking man's diet'.  The pilots could drink straight booze and eat steak, but had to avoid potatoes and other high carb foods and drink upon pain of exceeding their optimal weight.  Overweight meant they could be grounded!

Dr Atkins was right!

At the time, Dr Atkins had not achieved his later notoriety - but the principles of low carbohydrate intake, which he researched & promoted, are as valid today as they were then.  The low carbohydrate dietary recommendations precede by YEARS the 'fat-is-bad-for-you' dogma.  In fact, this juicy bit of mis-information accounts for many of today's health problems.  Problems like Alzheimer's, Senile Dementia, Diabetes & weight control (you know about the obesity epidemic), Epilepsy and Heart Disease.  The metabolic consequence of a high-carb diet, are controlled poorly or not at all by pharmaceuticals.

A Quote from a BLOG on Atkins.com by Colette Heimowitz; "..a low-carb diet by any other name is still a low-carb diet."  In fact, when the body does not have carbohydrates to burn for energy, it burns fat.  It is that simple.  Ps - the end result is more ketones for performance.

So this morning i had a Facebook posting referencing 'News about Coconut Oil Saturated Fat' (BAD!) Saying you should replace it with 'healthier fats'.  I was reminded of this article from 2002 - "What if it has all been a big fat lie?".  I just HAVE to share it with you :).

Here is a rebuttal to the American Heart Association warning -> avoid saturated fats (and you may know that coconut oil is a saturated fat) - "The AHA’s recommendation clearly contradicts research that exists on not only coconut oil but saturated fats in general, which debunks the old lipid theory of heart disease that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease." What I like are all the references with the article.

Various authors, including me, have written reams about the benefits of the low carb approach.  I affectionately call it the Low Carbohydrate Lifestyle modification (as compared with the typical Western Diet).  Others claim great success using the low glycemic index information.  The current catch-phrase is the 'ketogenic diet'.  These diets all have one thing in common - they encourage protein and fat-rich foods, and limit carbohydrate intake.  The key is to determine which foods are high in carbohydrates (and those which dramatically raise blood sugar and insulin levels) - and to AVOID them, or at least dramatically limit them.  The objective is to provide the body with lots of ketones rather than glucose.

I like to (laughingly) point out that carbs are the way ranchers fatten their cattle for market.

While there is a lot of information available about the sugar content of foods, especially processed and package foods, we tend to forget that carbohydrates in the body become glucose (... sugar by any other name).  While modern labeling of manufactured food requires a listing of the sugar content, most folks look at the calorie content and skip over the carbohydrate listing.  A healthy person should have an intake of about 40 grams of carbs per day.  If you want an easy way to check the nutritional value of a food, try this link: NutritionData

What is true is that when man became man he was a hunter-gatherer, not a farmer-reaper.  Carnivores and Omnivores (meat eaters and eat-anything-ers) have brains which function differently from the brains of herbivores.  To tell the truth, the human body - the brain in particular - much prefers ketones to work well.  Recently scientists have defined a type III Diabetes, a condition where the brain no longer can use glucose to produce insulin in the brain.  As you can imagine, this inability to use glucose causes all sorts of neurologic malfunctions.

We found this information in Wikipedia on Epilepsy and the Ketogenic diet.  It covers recent research to treat epileptic seizures.  Four diets are compared: The Typical American (or Western) diet, The Atkins diet, a Classic ketogenic diet 4:1, and the MCT (medium chain triglyceride) diet.  ps: triglycerides are also fatty acids.  pps: The MCT diet yields more ketones per unit of energy.

http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-190-a-basic-package-the-essentials.aspx
Note:  none of these diets take into account food allergies and intolerances.  All recommend vitamin and mineral supplementation.  I would add that long chain PREformed essential fatty acids are also required.  See my Basic Protocol.
