Digestion: Your KEY to Good Health

Question: What is supposed to happen when you eat food?

In the Beginning ...

“They” say you are supposed to gather as a happy family to enjoy your meal.   I know - that rarely happens.   It is difficult to leave worries and disputes at the door.  But emotions at mealtime are very important.  You can have a dramatic effect on successful digestion with a peaceful setting, a happy or a meditative mood.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/t-digestionProtocol.aspx
Do you remember your mother telling you to ‘slow down and chew your food’?
Chewing your food is the first ‘key’ step in the digestion of food..  Enjoy the textures and aromas presented by food.  Chewing mixes food with saliva, which contains enzymes that start carbohydrate digestion.  Chewing breaks food into small pieces.  This oral phase of digestion, with its smells and tangs, stimulates the stomach and pancreas to prepare for the next step in digestion.

When you swallow food you keep it in your stomach for an hour or two.  A healthy stomach should drop to a pH of about two; it mixes the food with hydrochloric acid and pepsin.  The result of this process is called chime.  This mixing begins the process of digesting proteins.  The carbohydrate digestion that began in the mouth is stopped by the acid.    The stomach acid helps defend the body against any unwanted harmful bacteria that arrived with the food.

After an hour or two the stomach contents feed into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine.  Secretions of bicarbonate from the pancreas buffer the acid contents. The pancreas also secretes pancreatic enzymes.  These digest carbohydrates, protein and fats. The liver secretes bile salts, which emulsifies the fats to aid in their absorption. The bile salts are stored in the gallbladder until they are needed.

Peristalsis is a phenomenon whereby the food is propelled along the gastro-intestinal (GI ) tract.   The small intestine contains small finger-like projections called villi.  Carbohydrates, proteins, water-soluble vitamins, and minerals are absorbed from the GI tract by the villi during this process.  The minerals are transported across the GI tract at specific sites, and their absorption is pH dependent.  Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption.

Fat-soluble nutrients and fat, using the bile salts, are absorbed in the last third of the small intestine, the ilium.  Next, everything is propelled into the colon where it is acted upon by intestinal bacteria.  Bacteria in the intestines play a major role in the body’s defense.  In fact, the normal flora and fauna of the GI tract fulfill many useful functions.  Bacteria break down any undigested molecules.  GI bacteria stimulate cell growth.  They repress the growth of harmful organisms.  All of this trains your immune system to respond only to pathogens, and promotes the body’s defense against many diseases.   Fluid is absorbed at this stage.  The contents are thus concentrated and finally excreted from the body.

...  In a nutshell

A healthy digestive system depends on proper operation at each phase.  Yes, proper food choices are important.  At the same time, food must be digested and absorbed from the GI tract into the body.  Then the products of digestion must be transported to the appropriate working sites (cells).  During the next step molecules must be picked up by the cells, used by them and properly exited from them. Debris is next picked up to be excreted.  Proper excretion varies, depending on whether debris is exhaled by the lungs, sweated out thru the skin, sent out via urine or excreted from the colon.

...  when things go wrong (and they probably will)

You know things can and do go wrong with any and all phases of digestion.   What follows is a greatly simplified description of problems and solutions.      Are burping, heartburn, flatulence, constipation or diarrhea normal?  NO!

What happens when things go wrong?

People enjoying the typical Western diet are famous for making poor food choices.  That is one (very serious) problem.  Unfortunately these food choices often include foods which cause GI distress.  Older people as a group do not chew well.  Busy people have a bad habit of bolting their food as fast as possible.  These ‘events’ start a cascade of malfunctions.

Your Stomach and GERDs
Older folks and very allergic people are likely to have very little stomach acid.  One consequence of a deficiency of stomach acid is acid reflux.  That’s right.  Acid reflux or GERDS  is more likely a result of too little rather than too much stomach acid.  The symptoms of too much and too little stomach acid are identical.  There is an easy way for you to test whether you have too much or too little stomach acid.  Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to an 8 oz glass of water.  Sip it with your meal.  If you have pain, stop drinking.  But, if the small amount of acid helps, you probably are low in hydrochloric acid.  Low stomach acid results in food remaining in the stomach well beyond the normal 2 hour stomach-emptying time.  When you lay down, the slightly acid stomach contents seep through the sphincter at the top of the stomach and creep up the slightly alkaline esophagus.  And that really BURNS.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-35-ginger-herb-41-concentrate.aspx
Ginger is very helpful if you have GERDs.  It relaxes the sphincter at the bottom of the stomach, thus allowing the stomach to empty.  Ginger has the additional benefit of increasing peristalsis along the entire GI tract.  This benefit of ginger minimizes the likelihood that the contents will collect in pockets and folds, putrefy and cause gas.

Your Stomach and Ulcers

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-33-enzymes-plus-digestion.aspx
You have another potential problem when the stomach does not produce enough acid.  You could get a duodenal ulcer.  As noted above, food leaving the stomach goes into the duodenal area.  Normally low pH of the contents challenges the pancreas to secrete buffering bicarbonate.  If the chime is the wrong pH this ‘challenge’ does not take place.  Hence, you have a fertile area for acid to cause ulcers.  For these reasons we recommend Enzymes Plus.  It adds acid for your stomach.  It also adds support for the rest of the digestive breakdown steps.

The Vilus needs protection
Food is propelled along to the small intestine, then on to the large intestine.   The small villi lining the GI tract have the task of picking up the various digested nutrient molecules: carbohydrates, amino acids, minerals and fats.  But what if the villi are damaged?

A better question might be: What can damage the villi so they don’t do their job?

Inflammation of the villi - from any cause - will have a bad effect on this phase of the digestive process..  Some common causes of damage to the villi are diarrhea, parasites, tropical sprue, inflammatory bowel disease, gastro enteritis, celiac disease, crohn’s disease, intolerance to any number of foods, Diabetes mellitis, malnutrition and fiber deficiency.   There is more!  There are many more causes.

The damage to intestinal mucosa and villi results in - wait for it - malnutrition.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-619-ultra-vites-now-with-active-methyl-b-vitamins.aspx
Malnutrition is very possible if  the nutrients fail to cross from the GI tract into the blood stream.  If they successfully cross the first barrier,  the molecules need to be transported to the various sites of action where the body does its work.  This is why we rely so heavily on  Ultra Vites.  The minerals are ‘smuggled’ into the body as amino acids (chelates) and the B-Vitamins are already in their active forms.  In other words, once your body heat dissolves the capsule, the nutrients are available for pick up, and ready for use.

The next step, after the molecules are transported across, can also be problematic.  The mechanisms the body uses to transport nutrients are very exact.  Specific carriers are needed to transport a mineral, such as iron, to the site of action by the cells.  This is a very technical and very important phase of the transport process.  Nutritional deficiencies can be traced to malfunctions of delivery.  But, after delivery to the cell, a particular molecule must cross the cell wall, and its waste products must be picked up for transport for excretion.

Fats & Fatty Acids
http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-618-ultra-omega-linic-best-omega-blend.aspx
What is all the noise about ‘essential’ fatty acids?  The body will use whatever fats you give it for one of its major functions - the building of cell walls.  If you give it the wrong building materials the cell will not function correctly to take up nutrients and expel waste.  The fish oil and black currant seed oil in Ultra Omega Liniic provide the correct fatty acid molecules needed to build the cells so they function properly.

Probiotics
We have written a lot about the need for probiotics.  The ‘helpful’ bacteria that live in your GI tract are susceptible to a number of damaging events.  Did you know that the herbicides used on GM foods, will kill your gut bacteria (even though Monsanto has ‘proven’ that its Roundup does not harm humans)?  Did you know that anti-biotics will kill both bad and helpful bacteria in the GI tract?  Did you know that constipation and diarrhea are both signs that your good bacteria are dying?  The lack of good bacteria in the GI tract points towards Autoimmune disease, Non-Alcoholic fatty liver disease, Parkinson’s disease - and many other ‘popular’ health problems.

http://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-650-ultra-4x6-probiotic.aspx
Our Ultra 4x6 Probiotic formula has the following beneficial bacteria:
  • Lactobacillus acidophillus DDS-1 is the studied and patented organism that is stomach acid and bile resistant.  It has been shown to inhibit Heliobacter pylori - and has many other proven benefits.
  • Lactobacillus paracasei is found mostly in the small intestine.  One of its benefits is that it improves immune function.
  • Lactobacillus bulgaricus helps with the digestion of dairy products.  It also has anti-cancer properties.
  • Streptococcus thermophilus is particularly helpful in easing the symptoms of lactose intolerance.
    •    Bifidobacterium bifidum is found in the intestines in large numbers.  It helps detoxify the intestines and promotes regular bowel movements.
  • Bifidobacterium longum inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria.  It prevents diarrhea and aids in cancer prevention.
  • Inulin is a prebiotic.  It is a naturally-occurring polysaccharide that is resistant to digestion.  Inulin promotes the colonization of beneficial bacteria.  They help maintain the mucosa barrier in the GI tract.

Prevent many ‘modern’ ailments

We offer a number of Natural Solutions (alternatives to OTC remedies)  that benefit your digestion - and your overall health.
  1. Enzymes Plus is a digestive aid that will benefit all phases of the digestive process
  2. Ultra Vites is a doctor formulated complete and effective multi with active B Vitamins
  3. Ultra Omega Linic provides the essential, pre formed, long chain, poly unsaturated fatty acids
  4. Ultra 4x6 Probiotic provides the ‘good’ bacteria that are necessary to your overall health.
  5. Ginger shortens stomach emptying time, thereby relieves GERDS.  It also promotes peristalsis, the movement of food from the stomach to the colon.

What do Restless Legs, PMS, Anxiety and Osteoporosis have in common?

These problems can be indicators that you need Magnesium.  Ultra Magnesium Chelate delivers 250 mg Magnesium

Is Magnesium important, you may ask?

Research shows that Magnesium may be the most important of all the minerals.  You need it for energy metabolism.  Do you have cramps?  your muscles need Magnesium.  Your nervous system need Magnesium.  In fact, all of the cells in your body use Magnesium.  Over 300 enzyme actions use Magnesium.  Magnesium is important for men, for athletes, for pregnant women, for young people, old people and everyone in between.

Magnesium in food

Here are a few of the Magnesium-rich foods: Nuts (raw), dark Green leafy vegetables such as spinach, fish, whole grains, avocados, bananas, and dark chocolate.  The irony of dark chocolate is that you have to be careful you don't negate its benefits with an equal amount of sugar.

Do you want to know the Magnesium value of your food?  Check here: http://nutritiondata.self.com/

PS - the recommended Daily Value for Magnesium is 400 mg

Is it likely that you have a deficiency of Magnesium?   Yes, You Could Be deficient!

  • Because it is water soluble, most Magnesium is lost in cooking.  More correctly, it is thrown out with the water used for cooking.
  • Most nutritional supplements contain very little Magnesium
  • Muscle cramps, aches and pains are reliable indicators of Magnesium deficiency

Ultra Magnesium Chelate provides the most reliable absorption of any form of oral magnesium.  Magnesium oral salts often cause diarrhea.  The addition of slippery elm in our product gives added protection to your gastro-intestinal (GI) tract.  In other words, it won't upset your stomach.

What is a chelated mineral, you may ask?

A chelate is a mineral ion that is attached to an amino acid.  This 'delivery system' has many benefits:

  • A mineral chelate is not absorbed as an ion, but carried or “smuggled” into the body attached to an amino acid
  • It is absorbed in the upper part of your small intestine as an amino acid.  The mineral goes along for a free ride.  This system is 2.5 to 3 times more efficient than ionic transport of salts.  Magnesium Oxide is an example of a salt
  • Studies have shown that chelated minerals go from the point of absorption to the site of action unchanged
  • A Chelate offers the most reliable absorption.
  • This form of Magnesium doesn’t cause diarrhea
  • An Amino Acid Chelate can be taken with food or on empty stomach
  • A chelated mineral is available to the body regardless of digestive issues

Cardiac benefits

  • Do you have heart arrhythmias?  You might have low Magnesium levels
  • Magnesium promotes stronger contraction of heart muscle, which helps the heart, of course!
  • Magnesium has the ability to dilate blood vessels, which helps lower blood pressure

Skeletal muscle benefits

  • Do you have restless legs syndrome?  With Ultra Magnesium chelate you may have no more leg cramps
  • With magnesium you can skip the spasm from muscles, bones & joint problems
  • With magnesium you may be able to breathe easier if you have asthma.

Other benefits with Ultra Magnesium Chelate

  • did you know you use up your Magnesium stores when you are anxious?
  • did you know that Magnesium can help calm you down when you are anxious?
  • did you know that Magnesium can help you sleep?
  • did you know that Magnesium can help you have strong, healthy bones?
  • did you know that Magnesium may help premenstrual syndrome symptoms?

You have found the great Magnesium supplement you have been looking for!

Coconut and Monolaurin

Critical Updates - Ultra Monolaurin - 9/1/15  Updated on 8/2017

On August 8, 2013 I had a discussion with Steven Lokken, DC, DABCI, Colorado  Springs CO, which I want to share with you.

Dr Lokken had been recommending our Ultra Monolaurin to his patients for about 2 years. He reports great success with a variety of health care problems. As a general rule, he recommends that his patients keep a bottle on the shelf, and at the first sign of a cold or flu symptom, take one or two scoops (1/4 tsp per scoop) that day and continue until symptoms are gone. In a day or two the symptoms are usually gone.

He has recommended it for sinus problems and general immune support. He has found that low white blood cell count respond to 3-4 scoops per day.  At the very end, he reminded me that he tells his teachers to start taking 2 scoops of Ultra Monolaurin per day for about 2 weeks before school starts. And guess what - they don’t get sick when they get exposed to whatever the kids bring to school. So I asked about the kids? He said, yes, they should start 1 or 2 scoops, too. (Smile)

We have known for years about the effectiveness of Monolaurin (the mono ester of lauric acid) for many virus conditions. It has more recently been shown to be effective against pathogenic bacteria, fungi such as candida, and it has anti protozoa activity. While this is validated by a number of studies, it is important to me to have it confirmed by a doctor who follows his patients for a long period of time using blood tests. Ps our Cinnamint toothpaste has monolaurin in it.

So what is new about Monolaurin?

How about Eat Fat - Lose Fat?

A number of recent studies show that by eating products that contain coconut you can lose weight. It seems to help control insulin resistance in type II Diabetes. When Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) are in the diet they are preferentially utilized. They usually occur as monoglycerides or triglycerides. They also increase the utilization of the long chain triglycerides - as are found in belly fat (and other places where there is unwanted fat). Ps. This effect was specifically referenced in the studies.

How can coconut do that, you may ask? This is because of the MCFAs in Coconut oil. The crystals in Ultra Monolaurin are made from coconut oil, so they contain the same MCFAs: Monolaurin and its vital medium-chain fatty acid companions, Monomyristin, Monocaprin and Monocaprylin.

There are a growing number of coconut products on the market - milk, ice cream, butter substitute, yogurt and most importantly, coconut oil. While these products can be - and are - used in place of cows milk with good results, they do provide calories. Therefore we use coconut products, coconut oil and Ultra Monolaurin to optimize the effects of the MCFAs.

Another interesting area of recent studies is the effect these MCFAs have on high energy use activities. Sports, exercise, and hard physical labor all use a lot of energy.  Dr Jones has written about the benefits of nutritional supplementation for Athletes - how it can affect (and effect) performance and help injury recovery.  NEW: MCFAs are metabolized to ketones which can be used like glucose for energy production. It is readily available.  Ultra Monolaurin should be taken before exercise for more strength and endurance.  If taken afterwards it leads to faster recovery and provides energy to prevent muscle loss.

Another area of interest is brain function when there is senile Dementia or Alzheimer’s.  Because the brain can also benefit from ketones, which are a product of MCFA metabolism, we have pointed out that Monolaurin should be considered when there is concern about senile dementia or Alzheimer’s.  That is in addition to substituting coconut oil for other fats in the diet - EXCEPT - you also need Ultra Omega-Linic because it supports brain structure and neural function.

Let me pause here and comment that adding MCFAs to the diet does NOT replace the need for the essential, PREformed, polyunsaturated long chain fatty acids.   Ultra Omega-Linic is still required to fulfill the need the body has for these ESSENTIAL fatty acids.  In fact, some of the MCFA studies showed poor results BECAUSE the EFAs were omitted from the diet.  Ultra Vites are also necessary to provide cofactors for all metabolic processes.

“Because MCT oil bypasses some digestive and absorptive processes required by the longer chain fatty acids, it provides readily available calories for people with digestive disorders.  This benefits patients with cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease and even newborn babies with malabsorption problems.  The pediatric department at the University of Louisville cautions that MCT oils do not contain the essential fatty acids required for optimal nutrition and therefore cannot be the sole source of fats in the diet.”

What IF?

What if there was an oil you could use for your daily cooking needs that would protect you from problems like heart disease or Alzheimer's?  What if that oil would improve your digestion, strengthen your immune system, protect you from infectious diseases, and help you lose excess weight?  And, by the way, you could improve your exercise, too.  Would you be interested?   That oil exists.  It is pure extra Virgin cold pressed Coconut oil.

What is less clear is how much to take!  We have, as stated above, substituted coconut oil and coconut products for as much of our daily cooking and eating needs as possible.  We also take Ultra Monolaurin.  One study we found was using the equivalent of about 10 scoops per day.  Each scoop of Ultra Monolaurin provides 750 mg monolaurin.  So about 2 ½ tsp equals about 22 grams of MCFAs.  I presume how much you might take depends on the severity of your problem and how much coconut oil is being consumed.

How much should you take?

Caution!

Begin the use Coconut oil and/or Ultra Monolaurin slowly as there is the possibility of a reaction to the die-off of unwanted organisms. Many of the articles address stomach upset, but the response may be any one of a variety of symptoms. Increase the amount used per day as symptoms subside.
To sum up our recommendations: 2 Ultra Vites per day, 2-4 Ultra Omega-Linic (or more, depending on the needs of the body) and a minimum of 1 scoop – up to perhaps 10 scoops per day Ultra Monolaurin (while substituting coconut oil and coconut products for daily cooking and eating needs)

Just when you thought you knew all about the benefits of coconut oil...

One more consideration about the use of coconut oil: because it supports the natural chemical balance of the skin it relieves dryness of skin and scalp. It can prevent wrinkles and sagging skin. Helps reduce age spots. Also helps protect the skin from damaging sun’s rays.  Many of our skin care products, like DermaCalm lotion, are made with monolaurin and coconut oil.

You can’t say this about many substances, but it is completely non-toxic and has no bad side effects - unless you happen to have an allergy to coconut.

About Nutritional Supplementation, Coconut oil and Monolaurin

By Marilyn Sidwell, owner of Nutrition Pure and Simple.
Even if a person could or would eat a perfect diet, biological diversity assures that each body has different nutritional needs. In addition, the very young, the very old and the very ill cannot get enough of the nutrients they need from the dietary intake.

Dr. Jones' recommendations for Basic Supplementation

Ultra Vites
The minimum daily requirements (MDR, RDI, RDA) have been determined so as to prevent symptoms of deficiency . They are in NO way adequate to have the body function at optimal levels, particularly considering bio-individuality, age and general health, and the use of prescription drugs that often interfere with the function of many nutrients.  Levels in our multi vitamin/mineral formulas have been researched by our medical nutritional consultant, John W Jones, MD, MPH, and their benefits have been confirmed in medical practice.

Ultra Vites is a unique multi vitamin-mineral formula.  In the truest sense of ‘simple’, our multi works for him, for her, for grandma and your teenager. And you can be sure it won’t just ‘pass right on through’.

Ultra Vites benefits

  1. Nutrient levels far exceed the minimum daily requirements - easily covering the essential nutritional bases for most healthy people.
  2. We use capsules - no fillers, no binders, no dyes
  3. It is easy for the body to absorb and use ALL the nutrients in the product
  4. There is a high level of B vitamins - high folic acid and high B12 in particular
  5. It is high in vitamin D3 - a very important nutrient that is often lacking
  6. It is high in magnesium - another nutrient often lacking
  7. And all the nutrients work synergistically to help keep the body running at peak performance
Ultra Vites2/Daypdf White PaperBuy UltraVites
A note about mineral supplementation.  Minerals presented to the body as chelates are about 2 ½ times more bioavailable than mineral salts (like calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide). It is not necessary to take them at any special time or with meals, and less is more. (Mineral Supplementation Facts)

Ultra Omega-Linic: fish oil Extraordinaire! And so much more

Is burping fish oil a problem?  It doesn't need to be.  We start with the wild Alaskan Salmon and other CLEAN deep water, cold water fish and add a special Black Currant Seed Oil.  These oils have been blended to form optimal levels of essential fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA.  They are analyzed for contaminants such as heavy metals and organic pollutants, and the product is guaranteed to exceed federal safety standards.   Neither the Salmon or the Fish Oil concentrate contains any protein for you to burp - or cause an allergic response.

Ultra Omega-Linic is PREformed Long Chain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are often recommended by doctors for a variety of heart conditions.  They can provide relief for the pain of arthritis.  Ultra Omega-Linic helps other inflammatory conditions, and is used to avoid or mitigate a variety of other health problems.  Essential fatty acids are necessary for proper development of the brain and retina of unborn babies and supplementation of pregnant women is recommended to prevent brain mass loss of the mother (postpartum depression).

Why are these fatty acids essential?  Because the body MUST have them - and can’t make the essential components from any other food.  And we don’t eat fish 3 times a day.  Black currant seed oil in Ultra Omega-Linic provides the equally important fatty acids GLA and SDA.  All of these work in concert with each other, and with the nutrients in Ultra Vites - and both products are necessary for optimal performance.

Side effects?  YES! A more beautiful YOU - noticeably prettier skin (what wrinkles?); shiny, more manageable, silky hair. Those are in addition to all the other health benefits.

Over the years this combination of fatty acids has been used by Dr Jones in his medical practice so successfully for so many problems that he laughingly calls it his ‘snake oil’.

Ultra Monolaurin

The secret disease fighter: The overuse of antibiotics is an increasing problem in modern medicine. The CDC has on ongoing program to discourage this practice.

Monolaurin is a component of mother’s milk; milk that must provide powerful disease fighting factors to sustain the infant as its own immune system develops. The exciting thing about Monolaurin is that it does not work like antibiotics, sulfa drugs, anti-viral, anti-protozoa or anti-fungal agents. It works directly on the lipid envelope coat of the virus, preventing attachment to susceptible host cells. It is non toxic to humans.

The 'ketogenic' diet - what is old is new again

By John W Jones, MD
6/2017
In the 1960's, while serving as Flight Surgeon at the SAC base, Mt Home, ID, we kept our pilots at 'flying weight' using what was laughingly known as 'the drinking man's diet'.  The pilots could drink straight booze and eat steak, but had to avoid potatoes and other high carb foods and drink upon pain of exceeding their optimal weight.  Overweight meant they could be grounded!

Dr Atkins was right!

At the time, Dr Atkins had not achieved his later notoriety - but the principles of low carbohydrate intake, which he researched & promoted, are as valid today as they were then.  The low carbohydrate dietary recommendations precede by YEARS the 'fat-is-bad-for-you' dogma.  In fact, this juicy bit of mis-information accounts for many of today's health problems.  Problems like Alzheimer's, Senile Dementia, Diabetes & weight control (you know about the obesity epidemic), Epilepsy and Heart Disease.  The metabolic consequence of a high-carb diet, are controlled poorly or not at all by pharmaceuticals.

A Quote from a BLOG on Atkins.com by Colette Heimowitz; "..a low-carb diet by any other name is still a low-carb diet."  In fact, when the body does not have carbohydrates to burn for energy, it burns fat.  It is that simple.  Ps - the end result is more ketones for performance.

So this morning i had a Facebook posting referencing 'News about Coconut Oil Saturated Fat' (BAD!) Saying you should replace it with 'healthier fats'.  I was reminded of this article from 2002 - "What if it has all been a big fat lie?".  I just HAVE to share it with you :).

Here is a rebuttal to the American Heart Association warning -> avoid saturated fats (and you may know that coconut oil is a saturated fat) - "The AHA’s recommendation clearly contradicts research that exists on not only coconut oil but saturated fats in general, which debunks the old lipid theory of heart disease that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease." What I like are all the references with the article.

Various authors, including me, have written reams about the benefits of the low carb approach.  I affectionately call it the Low Carbohydrate Lifestyle modification (as compared with the typical Western Diet).  Others claim great success using the low glycemic index information.  The current catch-phrase is the 'ketogenic diet'.  These diets all have one thing in common - they encourage protein and fat-rich foods, and limit carbohydrate intake.  The key is to determine which foods are high in carbohydrates (and those which dramatically raise blood sugar and insulin levels) - and to AVOID them, or at least dramatically limit them.  The objective is to provide the body with lots of ketones rather than glucose.

I like to (laughingly) point out that carbs are the way ranchers fatten their cattle for market.

While there is a lot of information available about the sugar content of foods, especially processed and package foods, we tend to forget that carbohydrates in the body become glucose (... sugar by any other name).  While modern labeling of manufactured food requires a listing of the sugar content, most folks look at the calorie content and skip over the carbohydrate listing.  A healthy person should have an intake of about 40 grams of carbs per day.  If you want an easy way to check the nutritional value of a food, try this link: NutritionData

What is true is that when man became man he was a hunter-gatherer, not a farmer-reaper.  Carnivores and Omnivores (meat eaters and eat-anything-ers) have brains which function differently from the brains of herbivores.  To tell the truth, the human body - the brain in particular - much prefers ketones to work well.  Recently scientists have defined a type III Diabetes, a condition where the brain no longer can use glucose to produce insulin in the brain.  As you can imagine, this inability to use glucose causes all sorts of neurologic malfunctions.

We found this information in Wikipedia on Epilepsy and the Ketogenic diet.  It covers recent research to treat epileptic seizures.  Four diets are compared: The Typical American (or Western) diet, The Atkins diet, a Classic ketogenic diet 4:1, and the MCT (medium chain triglyceride) diet.  ps: triglycerides are also fatty acids.  pps: The MCT diet yields more ketones per unit of energy.

Note:  none of these diets take into account food allergies and intolerances.  All recommend vitamin and mineral supplementation.  I would add that long chain PREformed essential fatty acids are also required.  See my Basic Protocol.

A Tummy Trouble Treat

Many common causes of GI distress also cause atrophy of the villi that line the GI tract.  These villi are responsible for absorption of nutrients.  If they don't do their job then a variety of malnutrition health issues result.  Digestion - What is Supposed to Happen!
Are you suffering from:
  • Celiac or Crohn's disease
  • Food Allergies
  • Giardia infections
There are also a whole raft of common complaints that cause the GI tract to 'malfunction'.
Are you plagued by:
  • nausea
  • flatulence, burping, bloating
  • not enough of the 'good' bacteria
  • GERDS

Download the PDF

1.    Ginger root extract - Ginger increases intestinal muscle contraction while relaxing the gastro duodenal sphincter. This allows the gastric contents to go into the duodenum rather than reflux into the esophagus (GERDS).  In fact, Ginger stimulates the bowel to propel food along the GI tract.

2.    Aloe Vera juice - Best known for its marvelous affects on damaged epithelium tissue, aloe vera contains many beneficial vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, amino and fatty acids.

3.    Peppermint oil - used to relieve spastic discomfort of the upper gastrointestinal tract and bile ducts, irritable colon, respiratory complaints, dyspepsia, nausea, colic, and flatulence.

4.    Cardamom seed oil - used as an antispasmodic, anti-nausea, it treats digestive complaints, it is antimicrobial and a tonic.

5.    Wild Thyme oil - Carminative (relieve flatulence), it forces gas downward and preventing it from building up again.  It stimulates digestion.  Since it kills worms, it may help with these and other intestinal problems.  Kills yeast (candida albacans)

6.    Chamomile oil - used in herbal medicine for a sore stomach and irritable bowel syndrome.  It is anti-inflammatory and bactericidal.  It may also be antispasmodic and antimutagenic.

7.    French Green Illite Clay - Green clays are curative volcanic ashes that detoxify and restore mineral balance. Our Illite clay contains only natural materials treated mechanically without any chemical additives.  As a bacteria-destroying agent it can render contaminated water innocuous.  When ingested, it travels along the digestive tract eliminating toxic agents and bacteria.  It has a long use for diarrhea and other gastro intestinal problems.

8.    Silica - Besides helping the body rid itself of heavy metals, Silica has been used for many years in the treatment of GI complaints, especially gas and colic.

Some notes on Silica.
  • Did you know that Silica is the most abundant mineral in the body?
  • Did you know that the body needs silica, along with other minerals and Vitamin D, to make bone?
  • Did you know that silica helps form healthier hair, skin & nails.

Bladder Blues

Dr Jones' Nutritional Recommendations for UTIs ...Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are the second most common type of infection in the body. They account for about 8.3 million doctor visits each year.  90% of these are Cystitis.  Women are especially prone to Cystitis.

In Cistitis, where eColi is the main problem.  d-Mannose removes the the sticky coating around the eColi.  This does not allow it to attach to the bladder wall and allows it to be flushed from the bladder.  It has also been used for interstitial cystitis.
  • Do you have a constant 'Need To Go' to the Bathroom?  Simple muscle tension could be the cause.  Then again, perhaps you have a mild bladder infection.
  • Do you have recurring bladder infections?  (AKA cystitis or UTI)  The infectious agent is usually e.Coli.  The herbs in BladrEase coupled with d-Mannose are very effective against this infectious agent.
  •  A Government Study (CDC):  over half of seniors are plagued by incontinence (bladder leaks), bladder infections and other urinary problems.
"Bladder and bowel incontinence is a highly prevalent disease that has emotional, health, social and economic impacts in the daily life of our elderly population in the U.S.," said Dr. Farzeen Firoozi, a urologist at North Shore-LIJ Health System in Manhasset, N.Y.

Many people swear by the benefits of cranberry juice - but it  has lots of sugar.  This  can be a problem if you are working to control your weight.  D-Mannose, the active ingredient in cranberry juice, is an effective alternative.

Some lifestyle changes may help:
  • balance fluid intake,
  • maintain a healthy weight,
  • exercise (kegel is specific for bladder control),
  • quit smoking
  • avoid constipation
Did you know that some medications can ‘cause’ incontinence - especially chemo drugs?
If you suspect that you are having problems from your meds, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Men - your prostate may put pressure on your bladder.  One reason for this is that you may have a low grade prostate infection.  D-Mannose might help here, too.

Older men are often bothered by multiple trips to the bathroom at night.  d-Mannose offers a solution.  We have reports that the best way of taking d-Mannose for this situation is a heaping teaspoon-full in 2 or 3 oz of water at bedtime.

Voila - GREAT IMPROVEMENT.
