Sleep: Is it Important? Are there solutions for Elusive Sleep?

Reviewed June 2016
We found a wonderful discussion about sleep in Wikipedia.
Read more at Dr Jones' website on Sleep Hygeine

Did you ever notice that all animals sleep?  Did you know that hibernation and coma are not states of sleep?  Birds and some other animals sleep while one brain lobe stays awake.  Babies spend much of their time sleeping - and as we age the amount of time spent sleeping varies.  I have often said that if you can sleep - you need to.  It seems that a lot of mental and physical 'housecleaning' takes place during our time asleep.  For instance, there is a relationship between sleep and your immune functions.  During sleep you have altered perceptions.  One interesting observation was that many times a person reported getting only 4 hours of sleep, when in reality they slept for 8 hours.  That is not to say it was a restful or productive sleep.

We summarized this information from The Harvard Women’s Health Watch, which gives six reasons you should get enough sleep:
1. Learning and Memory: Studies showed that people who’d slept after learning a task did better on tests later.
2. Metabolism and weight: Chronic sleep deprivation affects the way our bodies process and store carbohydrates.
3.Safety: Sleep debt may lead to falls and mistakes such as medical errors, air traffic mishaps, and road accidents.
4. Mood: Sleep loss may result in irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. (as if you didn't know)
5. Cardiovascular health: Serious sleep disorders have been linked to hypertension, increased stress hormone levels, and irregular heartbeat.   (I thought this was a powerful observation)
6. Disease: Sleep deprivation depresses immune function.

I am sure you know what happens in your life when you don't get enough sleep.  The issue then is 'How can you sleep better?   You can find a number of 'sleep hygiene' suggestions on the web - what to do or not to do in the hours before bedtime.  Bottom line: the bedroom should be held sacred for just sleep (or other relaxing activities).  A warm soaking bath is one of the recommendations to ease away the day’s tensions.  The addition of the soothing essential oils of lavender and chamomile blue makes your bath a real treat.  Rock-A-Bye Baby oil is often used to help soothe a restless baby.

There are a number of Nutritional possibilities for improved sleep:

hGh (human Growth hormone)
Measurements have found that the largest and most predictable level of growth hormone occurs about 1 hour after onset of sleep.  It was postulated this is because the body needs the support of hGh so it can perform its nighttime maintenance.  Because hGh, like other hormones, declines with age, Dr. Jones recommends 2 grams of l-Arginine (stimulates the pituitary to make hGh) at bedtime for a good night's sleep.

Daily surges of hGh occur at 3-5 hr intervals.  For folks who have trouble in the morning, Dr. Jones recommends 2 grams of l-Arginine.  If you are dragging in the afternoon, try 2 grams of  l-Arginine. Few people need this pick-me-up multiple times during the day, but most of us do need higher levels of this hGh stimulator as we age.  hGh levels are also affected by the amount of exercise you get, your eating habits and general nutritional status, and your sleep habits.  Ps. there are a number of amino acids which help your body make hGh, but Arginine seems to have the most effect, followed closely by l-Lysine.  You can use Lysine if you have a problem with herpes (Arginine stimulates the activity of this virus), or some people have good success by using both amino acids together.

Pain
One of the recurrent problems relating to poor sleep had to do with pain (even very low levels of pain).  This was closely related to stress and anxiety.  Very often a study subject would fall asleep easily, then awaken later and be unable to go back to sleep.

An example of a pain related awakening is Restless Legs Syndrome.  One study evaluated vitamin D levels for patients with this syndrome.  It was postulated that one cause of disturbed sleep might be chronic pain - and low vitamin D levels are associated with chronic pain.

We have a number of very effective products for pain relief.
1. Ultra Omega-Linic is highly recommended for Arthritis, all Inflammatory problems and Heart Health
2. Magnesium   Many people fall asleep easily, but something (maybe a need to use the bathroom) wakes them up.  Our 250 mg Ultra Magnesium Chelate can help you resume sleep.
3. Yucca is a fast-acting solution for pain that wakes you up at night
4. Opti-MSM Lotion Plus and MSM-750 capsules have a long record of being effective for relief of pain.
5. NutriFlow or Ultra Cal Mag Chelate can help tame your Restless Legs if they wake you up at night
6. We have several Vitamin D products - and 1000 IU in our adult multi vitamin and mineral formulations

We also recommend a number of Nutritional Supplements, Essential Oils and Herbs
(alternatives to common sleep medications):
We have a number of Nite Cap Essential Oil blends that could help you get back to sleep if you wake up at night.  The Nite Cap Synergy roll-on is handy to keep at your bed side, as would the Nite Cap body balm.  They both contain the essential oils Lavender and Chamomile blue, which are well known for their soothing properties.

High levels of the active B-Vitamins, such as you will find in our multi vitamin/mineral formulas affect your neurotransmitters - which affects your sleep and your brain function.  Ultra Adrenal has a number of nutrients which help brain function   Ultra Adrenal Complex can also combat chronic fatigue and reduce anxiety.

Eating
We found reference to a study evaluating how 4 different diets affected sleep.  We found nothing to alter our opinion that the Low Carbohydrate Lifestyle Modification is the most effective for this and many other health conditions .  A diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables comes highly recommended.  There was also a reference to bedtime snacks - specifically, you should not eat sweets or other foods high in simple carbohydrates just before bed.  And for sure, do not have a heavy meal in close proximity to bedtime.

Happy Dreams!

A Feminine Personal Hygiene Report

Reviewed July 2016
A very interesting email came across my screen referencing information from WomensVoices.org: http://www.womensvoices.org/issues/reports/chem-fatale.

The email referenced a report called Chem Fatale.  It  discussed  the possibly toxic and/or allergy-causing chemicals contained in  products directed towards the personal hygiene of women.

Specifically the report mentions Tampons, Pads, Feminine Wipes, Feminine Wash, Douche, Feminine Deodorant sprays, powders and suppositories, and Feminine Anti-Itch Creams.   Each item discussed carries a reference to hazardous ingredients which may be in (or part of) the product.

I asked Jean Bokelmann, a Medical Doctor with the Endobiogenic Integrative Medical Center (EIMC), what she thought about the information.    Here is her response: "I think the information is pretty legitimate.  I recommend organic cotton tampons or The Diva Cup®.  I've had some patients who made their own washable reusable pads.  The douching information is also good, but I think most women know douching is not generally healthy whereas the information about tampons is less well known.  It would be good to share."

You can learn more about Dr Bokelmann at http://eimcenter.com/about/.  You can use this link http://eimcenter.com/ to learn more about the many EIMC recommendations.

One of the areas of concern in the report has to do with the potential disruption of bacteria that normally inhabit a part of the body that is designed to be self-cleaning.

For the rest of the body we recommend any of our non-soap, non chemical-surfactant natural products.  For instance, we have three really great Body Washes that come with different essential oils.  They are called Calm (my favorite), Energize and Refresh.  We also have Sea Foam Body Wash.  All of these clean without stripping your skin's fragile moisture mantle while they nourish and condition the skin.

For concerns about yeast infections, Candida or problems such as Herpes, consider DermDefense Oil.  It has a special blend of ingredients to combat these kinds of problems and can be applied topically or used as recommended by a physician.  An additional product to help yeast infections is Ultra 4x6 Probiotic.  It has a 4 billion potency with 6 very important organisms to effectively combat these infections.  This effect is in addition to helping to restore normal flora in the GUT.

It is possible that some of the feminine hygiene products are irritating enough to cause Urinary Tract Infections - (UTIs).  We have products to help you solve these problems, also.

PhytoBiotic, Ultra Monolaurin and Ultra Elderberry Plus are effective against all infections.  In addition, Cystitis/UTI infections respond well to BladrEase and d-Mannose.  That's in addition to the Ultra Monolaurin benefits.  Dr Bokelmann and Dr Jones recommend that you drink 100% pure cranberry juice.

Some women suffer from vaginal dryness and/or low libido (sexual desire) as a result of localized irritation or infection from the use of products which contain undesirable chemicals or fragrances.  Phyto-Amore oil and Phyto-Amore capsules can be a great help for these situations.  The oil can be used topically for sensual lubrication - and it makes for a great massage!

Back to School Specials

Reviewed July 2016
'Tis the season we all wonder - "is is a cold or is it the flu?".   Back to school - Back to work - we bring home sniffles, sore throats, coughs, the wheezes and sneezes.

The Back to School Specials are all about staying well.

There is a lot of concern right now about the hundreds of children who have been sent to hospitals with enterovirus ev-d68.  A nurse who was interviewed on TV was quoted as saying that the problems are respiratory, and that not every patient is being tested to determine the exact cause of the Upper Respiratory Infection (URI).  An important product for your defense is Ultra Monolaurin.  Many studies have shown that enveloped viruses, such as enteroviruses, are deactivated by monolaurin.  It is good to take Ultra Monolaurin daily while the infection is active around you.  That way the Monolaurin is available to fight off possible exposures.

Ultra Monolaurin is a 90% pure distillate of Coconut oil.  It has a proven track record helping you fight off virus infections (antibiotics don't work against viruses).  Ultra Elderberry has proven useful against Upper Respiratory infections (URIs) and the flu bug.  Ultra Chew C can be enjoyed any time any where.  PhytoBiotic is an herbal remedy that is used to amplify the effectiveness of Ultra Monolaurin and Ultra Elderberry Plus.

We are adding Licorice to the mix.  Licorice is used world wide to 'treat' coughs and colds.  People really appreciate how it melts sticky phlegm.  It helps bronchial problems, too.

We also have recommendations for the use of Essential Oils (EO) for the cold and flu season.  You will really appreciate the relief you get from a soothing massage with one of our 90% pure and genuine Essential Oil blends.  Because they are readily absorbed through the skin (trans dermal) the effects are immediate.  Some people love to relieve their sinuses by inhaling the vapors of Lavender, Eucalyptus, Frankincense or one of the other soothing aromas.

How, you wonder?

Place 5 to 8 drops of EO into a bowl of hot water. Sit comfortably, your face over the vapors with a large towel covering your head and the bowl. Remember to keep your eyes closed. When the water cools, rinse your face with cool water and apply a true floral water (hydrolat/hydrosol), hydrating toner, or soothing facial oil.
Using Essential Oils

You'll be breathing better and smiling in no time.

Fats and Fatty Acids and EFAs; Myths, Misconceptions and Facts

Fats and Fatty Acids are Essential to Your Health! You have Questions about Fats and your Health?
  • Is it true that fats are bad for you?
  • Doesn't eating fat make you fat?
  • Is it true that we must have essential fatty acids in our diets?
  • What are PUFAs?
  • Is there a difference (as far as the body is concerned) between flax seed oil and fish oil?
Information for your health from Nutrition Pure and Simple - by Marilyn Sidwell (with help from John Jones, MD).  Reviewed June 2016

The answers to these questions plus other facts will help you understand the importance of Fat and Fatty Acids in your life!

Many Health problems arise from the 'Fat is Bad' Dietary Approach.  Because we have to eat 'something' if we stop eating fats and fatty foods, we have skewed our diets by increasing our carbohydrate intake.  This has led to some very bad results, like obesity and Diabetes.

Some fats, like coconut oil and olive oil are very beneficial.  Other fatty acids, like fish oil, contribute necessary 'essential' metabolites to the body.  These fatty acids produce prostaglandins, which work at the cellular level.  For instance, fish oil is often recommended for heart conditions and arthritis.  But did you know that it is also very helpful for Alzheimer's and Schizophrenia

We have combined two ingredients - Black Currant seed oil and Wild Alaskan Salmon fish oil - to provide you with a very special and unique product called Ultra Omega-Linic.  This means it presents an Optimal combination of Pre Formed, Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acids.   The addition of Black Currant seed oil adds the PUFA called GLA.  Its anti-inflammatory benefits enhance the effects of Fish Oil.  It has
  • a high level of EPA for body and brain function,
  • DHA for body and brain structure, and
  • GLA to support EPA and DHA.
During pregnancy and lactation, mothers need these Essential Fatty Acids in order to provide them to the baby for the development of its brain and retina.  The baby will take them from the mother, which could lead to problems for her, such as post partum depression.

What is Libido? Can you have more of it?

Updated September 2017

Get Your Love Back With Sexy herbs that deliver that ‘aphrodesiac effect’

Libido is loosely defined as sex drive.  Originally (from the latin) it was defined as 'desire' or 'lust'.

With the advent of drugs like Viagra, the term has come to represent the sexual performance of the male.  Alas, there is no 'Viagra' for women.

A number of herbs are said to provide a 'natural' alternative to Viagra.  One discussion I read said that a particular herb was a good alternative - provided you spend lots of money to buy the very pure form - and you take lots of it!  Another discussion stated that no herbs do what Viagra does.  But what if you don't want to take the drug?

The reality:  your sex drive is determined by a number of factors.

How you feel about yourself and your partner has a huge effect on performance.  Yes, we are discussing a physical activity.  The goal is to enhance the performance and pleasure of both participants.

Your age affects your sex drive.   Male and female hormone levels decline as you age.  Well, all hormone levels decline with age.   Your medical condition and medications have a striking effect on your pleasure.  Of the two, medication side effects have the worst effect.  Please discuss the side effects of all your medications with your pharmacist.

You owe it to yourself and your partner to be as healthy as you possibly can be.  To that end we recommend the 'Basic Protocol' by John W Jones, MD.

At the top of the list is Essential Fatty acids (also known as fish oil),  This is one of the better ways you can improve your libido.  Ultra Omega-Linic supplies prostaglandin precursors.  Prostaglandin was first isolated from seminal fluid (from the prostate gland) in 1935 by a Swedish physiologist (bet you didn't know that).

Since that time many studies have looked at these active hormone-like lipids.  Fish oil has been promoted for heart health.   You know, everyone wants a healthy heart!   The 'side effects' of taking Ultra Omega-Linic include a healthy brain, less trouble with arthritis, shiny hair, glowing skin, and a healthy 'libido'.

The second item is a high potency multi vitamin, such as Ultra Vites.  The active form of the B-Vitamins and the super delivery of all its ingredients makes Ultra Vites one of the more effective ways that you can stay in top form.  Visit Dr Jones' website for recipes' he has written for a variety of health issues.

We have put Ultra Vites and Ultra Omega-Linic together in a cost-saving package for you.

Fem-Ease capsules and Fem-Ease cream help stabilize the hormone levels for women.  Both of these products have wild yam, a precursor of progesterone.

We have two other herbal products that merit your consideration.  PhytoAmore capsules and PhytoAmore Oil.  The oil is suitable for full body massage, yet gentle enough for sensitive areas.  What could be more exciting than a massage with essential oils?

PhytoAmore capsules, with their special blend of herbs to boost libido, are best if taken daily - and two hours before intimacy .  These products also help sexual dysfunction problems.

And feedback from those who have used it (men & women) has been - well - very satisfactory.

These approaches are a lot more fun with better 'side effects' for men and women.
