Nutritional Recommendations for Pain Relief

Relief for Musculoskeletal Pain: Musculoskeletal Pain Nutritional Recommendations  from John W Jones, MD, MPH

Reviewed June 2016

Our Best Pain Relieving Products are:
Opti-MSM Lotion Plus - besides being a really nice  rubbing and Massage lotion, it contains MSM, Arnica, Boswellia (Frankincense) and essential oils such as Ardenia Tahitensis Flowers (Monoi de Tahiti), Citrus Tangerina (Tangerine) Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint ) Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil.   Maybe that's why it smells so good!  We keep it in the kitchen for burns & bites, but it works well on all parts of the body.  It is particularly effective for back aches, neck pain, knee pain and other joint pain.
Ultra Omega-Linic - What does it stand for, you ask?  Optimal (and Essential) PREformed, PolyUnsaturated Fatty Acids from Wild Alaskan Salmon, other fish oil concentrate and Black Currant Seed Oil.  Everyone who has tried it has a better response than from fish oil alone!  It is a superb anti inflammatory agent.  It is a great help for all kinds of joint pain and back pain.  Side effects?  Heart Health, Bone Health, Improved Vision.  Reports of Shiny, manageable Hair, Glowing Skin.

Yucca -  MUCH better for pain relief than NSAIDs.  It has major health benefits and NO DRUG adverse side effects.

The Musculoskeletal Pain link above has a number of additional recommendation.  For instance, Dr Jones always recommends a very good multi, such as Ultra Vites, to ensure that all the nutrients are available for metabolic processes.  In high pain/stress situations the body's nutritional needs increase dramatically.

There are also Calcium and Ultra Magnesium (for Spasm), as well as Vitamin D products.  In addition, consider Inflammease for inflammation and MSM 750 for higher levels of pain relief

L-Arginine and/or L-Lysine  stimulate the pituitary gland to produce human growth hormone.  It seems odd, but arginine can help you sleep.  PhytoCalm can also be considered for sleep because of its calming effects.   As you know, lack of sleep can be a major problem for those in pain.  Another product which can be considered for sleep is 5HTP Plus - when an SSRI drug is not being taken.  It is available as both 50 mg and 100 mg tablets.

Consider Vitamin E when using high levels of Essential Fatty Acids, and Vitamin C to reconstitute Vitamin E (among its many other benefits). Both are powerful anti-oxidants.

The use of Ultra-Monolaurin is recommended because pathogenic viruses and bacteria could be associated with many kinds of musculoskeletal problems.  Side effects?  Monolaurin use is associated with Improved brain function, weight loss, and more energy.

Obesity and associated diseases

Reviewed June 2016

You will be shocked!  You will be Amazed!  They proved what we already knew...

If you lack 'good' bacteria in your intestines you are more prone to obesity and associated diseases.  If your intestines are rich in a variety of flora you are less likely to suffer from these types of health problems:
  • Diabetes,
  • high Cholesterol,
  • Heart disease -
  • or be obese.
This from a recent study published in the journal Nature by Stanislas Dusko Ehrlich of France's National Institute  for Agricultural Research.

Home grown yogurt is known to provide lacto bacillus, but you can't be sure of store-bought.  And milk is a problem for many of us.  But a quality probiotic with a variety of organisms, such as our Ultra 4x6 Probiotic, is an important consideration for all of us - especially if we have any of the above diagnoses, or a family history of same.

How to Kill Off your good Bacteria

A course of antibiotics will kill all bacteria indiscriminately, and  diarrhea will flush them out.  Symptoms of GI distress should be cause for grabbing a bottle and putting in the good guys.  Look for one with at least 6 different bacterial species.

GMO foods and the ‘law of unintended consequences’

If you live in the United States you have most certainly been exposed to GM foods (or Genetically Modified Organisms).  Reviewed June 2016

Why worry about GMO food?
Farmers have been modifying organisms for a very long time.  So, what is different?  And what is a ‘Frankenfood’ anyway?

Why should you care whether the food you buy is GMO or not?
Many physicians believe GMO modified food may explain the increase in allergies, especially food allergies, and infections.  The toxins seem to trigger a rise in inflammatory responses, and may explain a rise in various health conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes.  Animal studies show an increase in tumors.  One study showed a marked difference in the size of two rats - one fed GMO food, one fed non-GMO food.

We have been assured that humans are not negatively affected by the herbicide Roundup.  However, the glyphosphate in it DOES affect the human intestinal flora.  Therefore Dr Jones recommends 1 or 2 Ultra 4x6 Probiotics per day.

You are convinced!  Now what can you do?
Get behind the movement to require GMO labeling of Genetically Modified foods.  And pay attention to what foods you buy when shopping.
Download the full article for all the facts on GMO.

By the way, the word "Natural" on the label doesn't mean what you think it means.  In fact, it has no standard definition.  In the words of Fast Food Nation author Eric Schlosser: "If they have to put the word 'Natural' on a box to convince you, it probably isn't

GE crops chelate soil microbes
While the link between a herbicide (which is directed toward plants) and soil microbes may not be immediately apparent, a ripple effect occurs because plants grow in an inter-related system.  In a nutshell, herbicides are chelators that form a barrier around specific nutrients, preventing whatever life form is seeking to utilize that element from utilizing it properly.  This effect applies to plants and soil microbes.  And it applies to animals and humans who consume the food.

Another fact:
Nationwide food consumption studies conducted by the USDA before the introduction of GMO foods, found that approximately 60% of the individuals surveyed were consuming only 70% of the daily minimum requirements of six essential nutrients. Those surveyed were people who made an effort to eat (and thought they were eating) a balanced diet.  GMO foods have been shown to contain even fewer nutrients. With these facts in mind, it is not likely that anyone is consuming an optimal supply of nutrients without supplementation.  For years John W Jones, MD, MPH has recommended a Basic Protocol that includes a high quality fish oil formulation (from clean Alaska water).  He also formulated a special daily vitamin.  For those who have GI distress, he recommends a probiotic that is proven to work!  These minimal recommendations are even more important now that GMO foods make it more difficult to obtain adequate essential nutrients JUST FROM FOOD!

Visit Dr Jones' website to view all his Nutritional Recommendations.  He has published information for over 30 health problems.

The law of unintended consequences
We received a  recent email from The Alliance for Natural Health asking us to help stop the spread of the dangerous chemical, glyphosate.  Their independent study has found that this probably carcinogen is found in foods that have not been sprayed with the herbicide.  It is permeating our entire food system.
Another researcher has asked the question: 'Has a new organism been created?'

If it is possible that any of this is true, we all need to be concerned.

If you are technically inclined, visit GMOSeralini

Early Man with a donut
Marilyn’s suggestions for an easy way to Lose Weight and eat healthy foods.  We call it Lifestyle Modification.

If you think about the kind of food available to early man, we have wandered very far from the kind of food we should be eating.  There were no potato crops, no rice paddies, no wheat fields.

Dr Jones tells me that the best diet is the Atkins Low Carbohydrate approach to lifestyle modification.  Carbohydrates are not “essential”, in the sense that the body makes them easily from what you eat.

Your first thought is that the Low Carbohydrate approach will be difficult to follow.   While Dr Jones and I find it easy and tasty, others think it is difficult.   Here are a few really great recipes

Johnathan Wright, MD, lectures against eating “white” things.  You should not eat:
  • White flour - it is in manufactured food as a hidden ingredient - which is a big problem for those who are gluten sensitive.  Avoid cakes, cookies, bread and all products with labels that say “wheat flour”.  Strictly speaking, all grains are high in carbohydrates, but the white flour has the least nutrient value.  Much to our benefit, there is a growing number of products you can buy that are certified Gluten Free.
  • White sugar - it also has many names, and is in most of the products mentioned under flour.  On cans and boxes, look for ingredients that end in “ose”.  The same thing can be said about the lack of nutrient value as I said for white flour.  Luckily, there are other sources for your sweet tooth.  Stevia is good sugar alternative, and recently we found a Coconut sugar.
  • White salt - well, you know, if you have high blood pressure, this is a no-no.  On the other hand, it can be a good source of iodine, unless your multi is supplying it for you.  Those of us with low blood pressure need the salt.  A common medical problem is the woman who appears in the doctor’s office with very low energy.  Upon questioning she confirms that “Yes, my husband has high blood pressure so we don’t eat salt.  “Yes, I do have low blood pressure”.  End of mystery!  She needs the salt.
  • White potatoes and White Rice - as I said above, early man did not have these, but if you must eat them, choose those that are not “white”.  We make some really good “chips” by frying up tablespoon size spoonfuls of grated Parmesan cheese.  Believe me, you will not feel deprived of your potato chips.   (Link to Recipes)
Think about the food that early man could eat.  He had to hunt or fish for protein.  It took a while to find and pick berries.  Nuts had to be shelled before they could be eaten.  You might be able to catch an animal for milk - if it didn’t kill you first.

Many fruits and vegetables are fairly high in carbohydrates - check the carb content per quantity!  This is the part that most people ignore.  And think about the fact that most foods are only grown during part of the year in our climate.  Shipping them from all parts of the world makes them available all thru the year - and their nutritive value is suspect.  Foods not grown locally should be eaten sparingly.

Learn to read labels.  For weight loss, ideally, your carbohydrate intake should be between 20 and 30 grams per day, so if that candy bar has 90 grams of carbohydrate, it takes care of your intake for two or three days.  Tomorrow you can’t eat...

For weight maintenance carbohydrate intake should be between 40 and 60 grams per day.  As long as the carbohydrate intake is low enough you can ignore calories.  And there is no need to restrict fats or protein intake.  In fact, a number of problems are caused by the lack of essential fatty acids in the diet.  The preformed essential ones are GLA, EPA and DHA.  See this page for the EFA Flow Chart for clarity. Most of us don’t eat fish every day (the best source of omega 3 fatty acids),  or even 3 times a week as early man probably did.  Farm fed fish may not contain as much essential fatty acids as wild fish do.  Ultra Omega-Linic contains Black Currant seed oil, which is an excellent source of the omega 6 fatty acids.  I believe there is a growing trend away from the trans fats and products such as Crisco for baking and regular margerines.

At you can learn the carbohydrate content of food you want to eat.  Some supermarkets have a listing of the carbohydrate (and other nutrients) value for the various FRESH fruits and vegetables which they sell.  In counting carbohydrates (as opposed to counting calories) you subtract the amount of fiber and the amount of sugar alcohols from total carbs.  The remainder is known as net carbs.  That’s what you count.

One of my early exposures to good eating habits came from a doctor whose motto was “If man made it, don’t eat it”.  Food in cans and boxes is high in things you don’t want to eat, and low in nutritive value.  As a consequence, Dr Jones and I shop the perimeter of the store.  We buy "real” (unprocessed) food and cook it minimally.  For those of you who are ill, I know there is a lot of appeal in foods that are organic.  For sure, this is a major consideration if you have problems with herbicides, pesticides and the like.

About the Nutrition Value of Fresh Food
(from Dr Jones’ Basic Nutritional Recommendations - A Basic Protocol)

A popular misconception held by both the lay public and the medical profession is that the American diet supplies sufficient levels of all the nutrients needed by the body.  In reality, the Western diet is characterized by imbalances and excesses.  Telling a patient “all you need to do is eat right” does not take into consideration the American lifestyle, problems associated with our food supply, or human nature.  Two nationwide food consumption studies conducted by the USDA found that approximately 60% of the individuals surveyed were consuming only 70% of the daily minimum requirements of six essential nutrients.  Those surveyed were people who made an effort to eat (and thought they were eating) a balanced diet.  The nutrients are: vitamin B6, folacin, zinc, copper, magnesium and calcium. With these facts in mind, it is not likely that anyone is consuming an optimal supply of nutrients ... without supplementation.  Consider Physician Formulated Ultra Vites.  Studies have shown that in order to meet the minimum daily requirements, one must consume at least 1100 calories of nutrient dense food.  This means that a patient on a 1000 calory diet could not meet the minimum daily requirements (MDR) without supplementation.  When many of the calories are “naked calories” (i.e. white sugar and flour) it is easy to see that even the MDRs are a problem, no matter what the caloric intake.   Compare our Physician Formulated Multis with the RDIs and with your Multi.

Sorry - this came to me in an email and I couldn't resist.  It is a close relative of "Ewe's not FAT, Ewe's FLUFFY".

The MDRs were designed to prevent deficiency states and diseases.  They do not address the issue of individual variability and optimal nutritional needs.  Individual requirements of vitamins and minerals may vary considerably.  This is especially true for certain groups such as young children, pregnant and lactating women, joggers, athletes, the elderly and persons with medical illnesses.

Unfortunately, as a result of these different needs, as well as problems such as poverty, ignorance in matters of food selection and preparation, dietary fads and confusion regarding the nutritive value of processed foods, total nutritional needs are often unmet.

Skin Tears, Dry Skin, Bruising, Wrinkles

Dr Jones found a study that discussed the problems of aging skin - especially the large number of skin tears and severe bruising that plague residents of nursing homes.  Skin tears and bruising is an even greater problem for those in wheel chairs and those prone to falls.

Based on information from Fleck, C. A. (2007). FAQs: Preventing and treating skin tears.  Advances in skin and wound care.  Journal for Prevention and Healing. 20(6), 315-321.

As has been stated in a number of studies, as skin ages it becomes thinner and the resulting dry skin makes it more prone to trauma (from even mild bumps).  The use of soap with chemical surfactants and long hot bathing further damages the skin   As you might imagine, older skin heals more slowly.  Well, older folks have more health issues and any healing is slower just because...  What eveyone worries about is wrinkles.  They are the most obvious sign that the skin is in trouble.

The study showed that advanced skin care products that possess nutritients and antioxidants can provide nourishment through the skin topically - even if the patient or resident is not receiving adequate nutrition from oral, enteral, or parenteral nutrition.  The study showed a reduction in skin tears from 180 down to 2 tears in a 6 month period.  The facility used a special skin care line which provided pH balanced, soap free, chemical surfactant free, and substances specially designed to nourish and support aged skin.

While we don't know what skin care line and soap-free cleansers were used in this study, Nutrition Pure and Simple provides a number of skin care products which benefit problem skin of all kinds, and aging skin in particular.  Dr Jones and I have the added advantage of caring for our own aging skin and seeing the improvement in our skin tearing and bruising.  There are 2 products in particular (Calm Body Wash and Hydrating Body Lotion) that greatly improve the quality of the skin.  A 3rd product, Dermacalm, has an excellent track record of providing relief for troubled skin (it is our best selling skin care product)

Dermacalm Lotion
for troubled skin

Benefit #1 - Monolaurin, which is a distillate of coconut oil, adds anti viral, anti bacterial, and anti fungal benefits to this unique lotion.  It was originally formulated to soothe stressed, irritated or inflamed skin and should be considered for Eczema, Roseacea, Psoriasis and problems such as Dermatitis

DermaCalm contains several ingredients that studies have shown to have positive effects:
  1. Rovisome Sensitive® showed anti inflammatory effects almost as strong as hydrocortisone
  2. Sepicalm S® specifically inhibits the main mediators responsible for irritation when the skin is under stress.  Its free radical scavenging, anti-elastase, anti-hyaluronidase, and anti-lipoxygenase activities have been proven in vitro. Its anti-stress activity against solar irritation, mechanical irritation, and chemical irritation have also been proven in vivo.  It is soothing, moisturizing, antiinflammatory and antioxidant.
  3. Monolaurin is a mid chain fatty acid shown to possess antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral properties.   Recent technology makes this a highly pure and extremely effective addition to the formula.
  4. Coconut oil has many benefits.   Its' small molecules let it penetrate the skin where it can heal and protect.  It also fights microbes that might arrive there.  Since it is high in Vitamin E, it also is highly nourishing.
This creme will soothe and moisturize irritated skin, including psoriasis, eczema.

Users have reported it is a great anti-wrinkle lotion.

Coping with radiation in daily living.

By John W Jones, MD, MPH  Nutritional Director for Nutrition Pure and Simple
There is an increasing awareness about radiation exposure because of problems in Japan with its nuclear reactor. This may be causing unnecessary worry and concern in the US. This paper discusses ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, and presents useful nutritional information to help the body cope with small and large exposures of radiation.

Ionizing radiation consists of particles or electromagnetic waves that are energetic enough to detach electrons from atoms or molecules, thus ionizing them. Its effect is mutagenic. Ionizing radiation is used in medical applications, and there are many other daily exposures.

Non-ionizing radiation refers to any type of electromagnetic radiation that does not carry enough energy per quantum to ionize atoms or molecules. Non-Ionizing radiation can produce burns, but is not mutagenic

There is a natural background radiation of both types that is present all around us. Some you don’t know about or ignore, such as cell phones, microwave ovens, smoking, food. Some radiation that can cause potential problems are CAT scans and other radiographic studies, and Airport body scanners.

These sources, both ionizing and non-ionizing, have the potential of being a greater problem as the incidence and proximity of exposure increases. In other words, you have more likelihood of damage from daily living exposure than from a nuclear disaster/accident.

Individuals who are most susceptible to damage from radiation are the very old, the very young, fetuses, and those in poor health, such as those with Autoimmune Diseases. So what can you do? Stay as healthy as possible. Susceptibility to problems from exposure varies according to the quality of one’s health.

Here is a Nutritional approach to minimize damage from radiation exposure.

The simple thing to do is follow my Basic Protocol. It has been developed to supply the optimal nutrients needed by the body on a daily basis.

  1. Ultra Vites - provides a high level of bioavailable minerals as well as antioxidants. It is designed to keep the body well mineralized. This presents less opportunity for radioactive minerals to be absorbed. Note: Ultra-Preventive Multi Vitamin Mineral combines all the features of Ultra Vites, plus it includes 1.1 grams of Spirulina. See #5 for more information on Spirulina.
  2. Ultra Omega-Linic - is anti inflammatory. It supplies the essential fatty acids necessary to keep cell membranes functional. Essential because the body cannot make them - they MUST be supplied. Our Wild Salmon oil is from the protected waters of Alaskan fisheries and are assayed for heavy metals and toxins and radiation.
  3. Extra Calcium (Calcium D Chelate) keeps optimal calcium levels in the bones, thus protecting them from the uptake of radioactive calcium and strontium.
  4. Argiletz French Green Illite Clay is the only one that has been approved for food use by the French National Health Superior Counsel for internal use. Its main properties are that it is Adsorbent, Absorbent, Purifying and Calming. Green clays are curative volcanic ashes that detoxify and restore mineral balance. This Illite clay contains only natural materials treated mechanically without any chemical additives. As a bacteria-destroying agent it can render contaminated water innocuous. When ingested, it travels along the digestive tract eliminating toxic agents and harmful bacteria.
  5. PhytoGreen Drink powder uses Organic Earthrise™ Spirulina. Earthrise™ Spirulina studies on the children exposed after the Chernoble accident showed a 50% decrease in radioactive elements. Spirulina also stimulates recovery of white blood cells and bone marrow counts.
  6. Spirulina Caps - each 6 capsules provide 3.24 g Spirulina Natural® Earthrise™ Spirulina.

Information about the fish oil used in Ultra Omega-Linic

We use wild Alaska Fish Oil in Ultra Omega-Linic

The Wild Alaska Salmon is caught in Alaskan waters by a certified Alaskan fishery. Neither the Salmon oil nor the concentrated Fish oil used in this product contains any protein. It has been filtered out. The product is analyzed for contaminants such as heavy metals, radiation and organic pollutants, and is guaranteed to exceed federal safety standards.

For thousands of years, the fish of Alaska's seas and rivers have supported human use  from fisheries used by Alaska's indigenous native peoples since prehistoric times. It has evolved into today's modern seafood industry. Alaska is home to abundant stocks of many species of fish, and offers some of the cleanest marine, freshwater, and upland habitats in the world.

Effective state and federal institutions manage fisheries that are productive and sustainable, clean and healthy. Alaska is the only State in the nation whose Constitution explicitly mandates that all fish, including salmon, shall be utilized, developed and maintained on the sustained yield principle. Alaska is thousands of miles away from large sources of pollution that can contaminate the human food supply in other parts of the world. These distances, combined with the earth's patterns of circulation of water and air, help to ensure that Alaska's own waters are among the cleanest in the world.

Alaska's human population density is among the lowest of any in the United States, and lower than most places in the world. Alaska has little heavy industry, and has strict regulations governing development activities, such as road building, mining, logging, and sewage treatment. The State of Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation (ADEC) has a regulatory section dealing specifically with water quality. Water discharges, such as sewage and other potential pollutants, are closely regulated to ensure high water quality. In addition, ADFG requires prior approval for any in-stream construction activities in Alaska's salmon streams through the authority of the Alaska statutes known as the "Anadromous Fish Act" (Alaska Statute 16.05.870). Alaska also has a Forest Practices Act requiring buffer zones from logging along salmon streams to prevent erosion and protect spawning and rearing habitat. Clean marine habitats produce pure seafood products, pure and remarkably free of contamination by pesticides, petroleum derivatives, PCBs, heavy metals, and bacteria.

Want a very special non-fluoride toothpaste?

Cinnamint Toothpaste! Great for the Whole Family

Reviewed 8/2017

Cinnamint Toothpaste has a number of really neat ingredients, but it does NOT contain Fluoride.    Xylitol is one of its main benefits.  This sugar is known for its ability to strenghten tooth enamel.  Four different clays polish and whiten teeth.

Best of all, it contains monolaurin which provides anti bacterial and anti viral defense for your gums. A truism - dental infections can lead to other health problems.  Some investigators have found that fat, such as lard, reduced the incidence of caries (tooth decay) more than did lowering the intake of carbohydrate.  There are no studies to 'prove it', but it makes sense that coconut oil (our source for monolaurin) would be even more effective than other oils for gum health.

The soothing essential oils of peppermint, spearmint, cinnamon, myrrh, grape seed and green tea extract leave your mouth feeling fresh as an after dinner mint..

Check out our 5 oz deluxe airless pump bottle.

Wouldn't you prefer a toothpaste without Fluoride?

Coconut and Monolaurin

Critical Updates - Ultra Monolaurin - 9/1/15  Updated on 8/2017

On August 8, 2013 I had a discussion with Steven Lokken, DC, DABCI, Colorado  Springs CO, which I want to share with you.

Dr Lokken had been recommending our Ultra Monolaurin to his patients for about 2 years. He reports great success with a variety of health care problems. As a general rule, he recommends that his patients keep a bottle on the shelf, and at the first sign of a cold or flu symptom, take one or two scoops (1/4 tsp per scoop) that day and continue until symptoms are gone. In a day or two the symptoms are usually gone.

He has recommended it for sinus problems and general immune support. He has found that low white blood cell count respond to 3-4 scoops per day.  At the very end, he reminded me that he tells his teachers to start taking 2 scoops of Ultra Monolaurin per day for about 2 weeks before school starts. And guess what - they don’t get sick when they get exposed to whatever the kids bring to school. So I asked about the kids? He said, yes, they should start 1 or 2 scoops, too. (Smile)

We have known for years about the effectiveness of Monolaurin (the mono ester of lauric acid) for many virus conditions. It has more recently been shown to be effective against pathogenic bacteria, fungi such as candida, and it has anti protozoa activity. While this is validated by a number of studies, it is important to me to have it confirmed by a doctor who follows his patients for a long period of time using blood tests. Ps our Cinnamint toothpaste has monolaurin in it.

So what is new about Monolaurin?

How about Eat Fat - Lose Fat?

A number of recent studies show that by eating products that contain coconut you can lose weight. It seems to help control insulin resistance in type II Diabetes. When Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) are in the diet they are preferentially utilized. They usually occur as monoglycerides or triglycerides. They also increase the utilization of the long chain triglycerides - as are found in belly fat (and other places where there is unwanted fat). Ps. This effect was specifically referenced in the studies.

How can coconut do that, you may ask? This is because of the MCFAs in Coconut oil. The crystals in Ultra Monolaurin are made from coconut oil, so they contain the same MCFAs: Monolaurin and its vital medium-chain fatty acid companions, Monomyristin, Monocaprin and Monocaprylin.

There are a growing number of coconut products on the market - milk, ice cream, butter substitute, yogurt and most importantly, coconut oil. While these products can be - and are - used in place of cows milk with good results, they do provide calories. Therefore we use coconut products, coconut oil and Ultra Monolaurin to optimize the effects of the MCFAs.

Another interesting area of recent studies is the effect these MCFAs have on high energy use activities. Sports, exercise, and hard physical labor all use a lot of energy.  Dr Jones has written about the benefits of nutritional supplementation for Athletes - how it can affect (and effect) performance and help injury recovery.  NEW: MCFAs are metabolized to ketones which can be used like glucose for energy production. It is readily available.  Ultra Monolaurin should be taken before exercise for more strength and endurance.  If taken afterwards it leads to faster recovery and provides energy to prevent muscle loss.

Another area of interest is brain function when there is senile Dementia or Alzheimer’s.  Because the brain can also benefit from ketones, which are a product of MCFA metabolism, we have pointed out that Monolaurin should be considered when there is concern about senile dementia or Alzheimer’s.  That is in addition to substituting coconut oil for other fats in the diet - EXCEPT - you also need Ultra Omega-Linic because it supports brain structure and neural function.

Let me pause here and comment that adding MCFAs to the diet does NOT replace the need for the essential, PREformed, polyunsaturated long chain fatty acids.   Ultra Omega-Linic is still required to fulfill the need the body has for these ESSENTIAL fatty acids.  In fact, some of the MCFA studies showed poor results BECAUSE the EFAs were omitted from the diet.  Ultra Vites are also necessary to provide cofactors for all metabolic processes.

“Because MCT oil bypasses some digestive and absorptive processes required by the longer chain fatty acids, it provides readily available calories for people with digestive disorders.  This benefits patients with cystic fibrosis, pancreatitis, intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease and even newborn babies with malabsorption problems.  The pediatric department at the University of Louisville cautions that MCT oils do not contain the essential fatty acids required for optimal nutrition and therefore cannot be the sole source of fats in the diet.”

What IF?

What if there was an oil you could use for your daily cooking needs that would protect you from problems like heart disease or Alzheimer's?  What if that oil would improve your digestion, strengthen your immune system, protect you from infectious diseases, and help you lose excess weight?  And, by the way, you could improve your exercise, too.  Would you be interested?   That oil exists.  It is pure extra Virgin cold pressed Coconut oil.

What is less clear is how much to take!  We have, as stated above, substituted coconut oil and coconut products for as much of our daily cooking and eating needs as possible.  We also take Ultra Monolaurin.  One study we found was using the equivalent of about 10 scoops per day.  Each scoop of Ultra Monolaurin provides 750 mg monolaurin.  So about 2 ½ tsp equals about 22 grams of MCFAs.  I presume how much you might take depends on the severity of your problem and how much coconut oil is being consumed.

How much should you take?

Begin the use Coconut oil and/or Ultra Monolaurin slowly as there is the possibility of a reaction to the die-off of unwanted organisms. Many of the articles address stomach upset, but the response may be any one of a variety of symptoms. Increase the amount used per day as symptoms subside.
To sum up our recommendations: 2 Ultra Vites per day, 2-4 Ultra Omega-Linic (or more, depending on the needs of the body) and a minimum of 1 scoop – up to perhaps 10 scoops per day Ultra Monolaurin (while substituting coconut oil and coconut products for daily cooking and eating needs)

Just when you thought you knew all about the benefits of coconut oil...

One more consideration about the use of coconut oil: because it supports the natural chemical balance of the skin it relieves dryness of skin and scalp. It can prevent wrinkles and sagging skin. Helps reduce age spots. Also helps protect the skin from damaging sun’s rays.  Many of our skin care products, like DermaCalm lotion, are made with monolaurin and coconut oil.

You can’t say this about many substances, but it is completely non-toxic and has no bad side effects - unless you happen to have an allergy to coconut.

About Nutritional Supplementation, Coconut oil and Monolaurin

By Marilyn Sidwell, owner of Nutrition Pure and Simple.
Even if a person could or would eat a perfect diet, biological diversity assures that each body has different nutritional needs. In addition, the very young, the very old and the very ill cannot get enough of the nutrients they need from the dietary intake.

Dr. Jones' recommendations for Basic Supplementation

Ultra Vites
The minimum daily requirements (MDR, RDI, RDA) have been determined so as to prevent symptoms of deficiency . They are in NO way adequate to have the body function at optimal levels, particularly considering bio-individuality, age and general health, and the use of prescription drugs that often interfere with the function of many nutrients.  Levels in our multi vitamin/mineral formulas have been researched by our medical nutritional consultant, John W Jones, MD, MPH, and their benefits have been confirmed in medical practice.

Ultra Vites is a unique multi vitamin-mineral formula.  In the truest sense of ‘simple’, our multi works for him, for her, for grandma and your teenager. And you can be sure it won’t just ‘pass right on through’.

Ultra Vites benefits

  1. Nutrient levels far exceed the minimum daily requirements - easily covering the essential nutritional bases for most healthy people.
  2. We use capsules - no fillers, no binders, no dyes
  3. It is easy for the body to absorb and use ALL the nutrients in the product
  4. There is a high level of B vitamins - high folic acid and high B12 in particular
  5. It is high in vitamin D3 - a very important nutrient that is often lacking
  6. It is high in magnesium - another nutrient often lacking
  7. And all the nutrients work synergistically to help keep the body running at peak performance

A note about mineral supplementation.  Minerals presented to the body as chelates are about 2 ½ times more bioavailable than mineral salts (like calcium carbonate or magnesium oxide). It is not necessary to take them at any special time or with meals, and less is more. (Mineral Supplementation Facts)

Ultra Omega-Linic: fish oil Extraordinaire! And so much more

Is burping fish oil a problem?  It doesn't need to be.  We start with the wild Alaskan Salmon and other CLEAN deep water, cold water fish and add a special Black Currant Seed Oil.  These oils have been blended to form optimal levels of essential fatty acids, especially EPA and DHA.  They are analyzed for contaminants such as heavy metals and organic pollutants, and the product is guaranteed to exceed federal safety standards.   Neither the Salmon or the Fish Oil concentrate contains any protein for you to burp - or cause an allergic response.

Ultra Omega-Linic is PREformed Long Chain polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are often recommended by doctors for a variety of heart conditions.  They can provide relief for the pain of arthritis.  Ultra Omega-Linic helps other inflammatory conditions, and is used to avoid or mitigate a variety of other health problems.  Essential fatty acids are necessary for proper development of the brain and retina of unborn babies and supplementation of pregnant women is recommended to prevent brain mass loss of the mother (postpartum depression).

Why are these fatty acids essential?  Because the body MUST have them - and can’t make the essential components from any other food.  And we don’t eat fish 3 times a day.  Black currant seed oil in Ultra Omega-Linic provides the equally important fatty acids GLA and SDA.  All of these work in concert with each other, and with the nutrients in Ultra Vites - and both products are necessary for optimal performance.

Side effects?  YES! A more beautiful YOU - noticeably prettier skin (what wrinkles?); shiny, more manageable, silky hair. Those are in addition to all the other health benefits.

Over the years this combination of fatty acids has been used by Dr Jones in his medical practice so successfully for so many problems that he laughingly calls it his ‘snake oil’.

Ultra Monolaurin

The secret disease fighter: The overuse of antibiotics is an increasing problem in modern medicine. The CDC has on ongoing program to discourage this practice.

Monolaurin is a component of mother’s milk; milk that must provide powerful disease fighting factors to sustain the infant as its own immune system develops. The exciting thing about Monolaurin is that it does not work like antibiotics, sulfa drugs, anti-viral, anti-protozoa or anti-fungal agents. It works directly on the lipid envelope coat of the virus, preventing attachment to susceptible host cells. It is non toxic to humans.
