<i>A discussion from Marilyn Sidwell regarding an email entitled ‘Sweet Poison’</i><br />

In September of 2014 I received an email that described a woman who began a downhill health journey in October 2001. Her worst problem was severe muscle pain. Doctors performed tissue biopsies and prescribed medications. The problems persisted and she made plans for ‘her last hooray’. The most likely diagnosis given to the lady was MS.<br />
<br />
The following March her brother, referring to an email he had received, asked her if she drank diet soda? She responded that she did. He suggested that she stop the diet pop. She did, and within 32 hours she called him to report that the muscle spasms had gone away and she could walk. Their belief is that she had Aspartame poisoning and that avoiding its use saved her life.<br />
<br />
The email references information from H.J. Roberts, M.D., F.A.C.P, F.C.C.P. In a reply submitted to Time Magazine he states that it is his professional opinion that Aspartame products should be removed from the market as an “imminent public health threat”. He labels the problem of the habitual consumption of “diet” products containing the chemical aspartame (marketed as ‘Nutra Sweet’, ‘Equal’, and ‘Spoonful’) as <b>aspartame disease</b>. He also labels it a clinical addiction. There are now over 5,000 products on the market that contain this deadly chemical, and there will be thousands more introduced. Read ALL labels carefully for Aspartame (or one of its marketing names) - even those foods that you have used in the past <i>which did not contain it</i>.<br />
<br />
The symptoms reported in Dr Roberts’ database of over 1,200 aspartame reactors include neurologic, psychologic, eye, endocrine, metabolic and pediatric ravages. He also believes products containing Aspartame can cause, aggravate or accelerate migraine, seizures, MS, diabetes and its complications, Alzheimer’s disease and brain tumors.<br />
<br />
Dr Roberts goes on to report his belief that many of those who suffer these symptoms of aspartame disease also have difficulty stopping its use due to violent and prolonged withdrawl reactions. He reported that the amounts of aspartame products consumed daily ranged up to six liters or 12 cans of sodas, 20 or more packets, and lots of chewing gum. Withdrawl symptoms, including an intense craving, usually abated promptly upon resuming aspartame.<br />
<br />
The email author went on to report that when the temperature of this sweetener exceeds 86 degrees F, (normal body temperature is 98.6 degrees F) the wood alcohol in aspartame converts to formaldehyde, then to formic acid, the poison found in the sting of fire ants. Many people are diagnosed in error with MS. While MS is not a death sentence, Methanol toxicity that results from the breakdown of aspartame <i><b>is</b> a death sentence.</i><br />
<br />
<b>Systemic lupus </b>has become almost as rampant as MS, especially among diet pop drinkers. When one considers the myriad symptoms caused by this artificial sweetener, it is no wonder it is considered by many to produce aspartame poisoning. Consider the following symptoms reported by aspartame users: tinnitus, fibromyalgia, spasms and cramps, shooting pains, numbness in the legs, vertigo, dizziness, headaches, joint pain, unexplainable depression, anxiety attacks, slurred speech, blurred vision or memory loss.<br />
<br />
When these problems are the result of ingesting aspartame they are usually reversed by stopping its use. A quote from the email: “Diet soda is NOT a diet product! It is a chemically altered product that actually makes you crave carbohydrates.” A diagnosis of <b>diabetic retinopathy </b>might in fact be a problem caused by aspartame, which drives the blood sugar out of control. <b>Diabetic memory loss </b>may actually be caused by the neurotoxicity of aspartic acid and phenylalanine when taken without the other amino acids necessary for a good amino acid balance.<br />
<br />
Aspartame crosses the blood/brain barrier where it deteriorates the neurons. This causes problems such as seizures, depression, rage, manic depression, panic attacks, uncontrollable anger and rage. Documentation and observation reveal that some children diagnosed with ADD and ADHD have had complete turnarounds in behavior when this chemical is removed from their diet. <br />
<br />
Dr Robert warns that aspartame can cause birth defects if it is being consumed at the time of conception and during early pregnancy. In his opinion, children should NEVER be given artificial sweeteners.<br />
<br />
In his article on <a href="https://nutritionpureandsimple.com/Images/PDF%20JJProtocols/sports.pdf" target="_blank"><b>Sports, Athletics and High Energy Activities,</b></a> Dr John Jones warns about the danger of drinking ‘diet’ pop. Aspartame seems to have a negative affect on young athletes. It has a negative affect on previously ‘well’ individuals - pilots, drivers and athletes. Dr Jones quotes a CDC statistic “Over 460,000 people annually die of a disorder called sudden cardiac “death”. This condition strikes otherwise healthy people who have experienced no obvious symptoms of heart disease prior to their abrupt deaths. This includes an alarming number of ... professional athletes.”<br />
<br />

Sugar facts and Information</h3>

The term natural sugar refers to those sugars which are derived from plant material and not made in a laboratory. The definition of ‘natural’ is moot. For instance, the FDA will not allow the Sugar Association to label cane and sugar beet products as natural. Natural sweeteners are listed as barley malt syrup, blackstrap molasses, brown rice syrup, date sugar, evaporated white grape juice and evaporated whole cane juice, honey, maple syrup and granules, mixed fruit juice concentrate and stevia.<br />
<br />
While we are on the subject of sugar, the world-wide increase in the consumption of high fructose corn syrup parallels the increase in overweight people and obesity world wide! Studies have shown that consumption of sucrose (which is glucose and fructose) and fructose (another sugar) promotes <a href="https://nutritionpureandsimple.com/Images/PDF%20JJProtocols/FattyLiverDisease.pdf" target="_blank"><b>fatty liver disease</b></a>. We recommend you read all labels carefully to avoid high fructose corn syrup.<br />
<br />
A sugar substitute duplicates the effect of sugar in taste, usually with less food energy. Some of these are natural, some are synthetic. Six intensely sweet sugar substitutes have been approved for use in the US - Stevia, aspartame, sucralose, neotame, acesulfame potassium and saccharin. Earlier I alerted you to the dangers of Aspartame (AKA sweet poison). And Dr Jones has written about how the use of high fructose corn syrup sets the stage for <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/t-diabetes.aspx" target="_blank">blood sugar problems and Diabetes</a>, as well as the world-wide explosion of Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver disease (<a href="https://nutritionpureandsimple.com/Images/PDF%20JJProtocols/FattyLiverDisease.pdf" target="_blank">NAFLD</a>). It's cause has been attributed to the fact that the use of HFCS in food has been exploding.<br />

Today we learned that the food companies have tumbled to our preference - you know, the one where we would prefer to buy food which does not contain these toxic additives. Their solution? Rename them, of course! That way you don't really need to alter the ingredients, just change the design of the box - and modify the label information.<br />
<br />
This means that you must be more diligent than ever when buying food - especially food that comes in cans and boxes - packaged by one of the food manufacturing companies.. For instance, you can still determine how much sugar (fructose) the 'serving size' contains by checking the amount of carbohydrate. Um, another way they 'cheat' is to downsize the serving size. Would you really eat only 1/4 cup of that cereal, for instance? You may also find a product that says it does not contain Aspartame. Now you know to look for AminoSweet - or you might find some other toxic substances to tease your 'sweet tooth'.<br />
<br />
Don't be misled by the the word 'Natural'. It is plastered on the outside of nearly every box and can in the store. Unfortunately, that word really has no meaning in this context - except to make you think you are getting something not created in a food factory.<br />
<br />
In reality you need to determine both calories and carbohydrates in a given serving size.<br />
<ol>
<li>A <b>Calorie</b> is defined as a unit of energy. The folks who promote weight loss based on exercise presume that when you exercise you will burn more calories than you take in - and thus you will lose weight (one can only hope)</li>
<li>A <b>Carbohydrate</b> is an organic compound (hydrogen and carbon). Foods that are high in carbohydrates are rich in starch and/or sugar. </li>
</ol>
Carbs always contain calories (4 per gram). Calories do not always indicate carbs. Carbs affect blood sugar and insulin. Insulin regulates the use and storage of fat. Think of insulin as a switch. When the switch is 'on' - in the few hours after eating, for example - you burn carbs for energy and store excess as fat. When the insulin switch is 'off' - after insulin has been used up - you burn fat for fuel.<br />
<br />
The condition called 'insulin resistance' develops when the amount of sugar, particularly simple sugar (and high fructose corn syrup) affects the pancreas so that it becomes confused. It becomes more and more difficult for the body to maintain sugar in the blood at the proper levels. It becomes easier to store fat, and harder to lose it.<br />

This website discussed a popular brand which lists 3 ingredients. But the Environmental Working Group found it contained 87 chemicals - many of which are toxic and carcinogenic. Using it might expose you to hazardous materials through inhalation (those globules keep floating in the air) or absorbed through your skin.<br />

And what about the (false) impression that you are somehow 'cleaning the air' by <b><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_freshener" target="_blank">eliminating odors</a></b>? <br />
Not quite fair, is it?<br />

<b>Is there a better way? YES!</b></h3>
You could <b><a href="https://www.nutritionpureandsimple.com/Images/EO/CompanionPakNew.pdf" target="_blank">make your own air freshener</a> with essential oils.</b><br />

Many Essential Oils (EO) have properties that can enhance the air in your home. Create your own Air Freshener spray for your space. Do this by filling a 2-ounce spray bottle with distilled water and add 30 to 40 drops pure essential oils. Always shake before each use.<br />

If you want the spray to enhance your well-being to this: put 10 drops each lavender, rosemary, tea tree and eucalyptus in 2 oz distilled water. Hint: bugs don’t like to be around....<br />

Opioid-induced - or constipation from any cause - is the kind of GUT problem that is often considered 'normal', and as a result it is not usually discussed with the doctor.<br />

It's not really a vitamin. More correctly it is a PRO hormone.</h2>

<b>Did you know? </b> Vitamin D3 is essential for higher animals. Normally the skin produces D3 photochemically. Hint: that means it needs the sun. <br />
<br />
NO Vitamin D is produced by the body from fall to spring in latitudes north of 35 degrees. (Los Angeles, CA to Charlotte, NC) - the part of the year when the sun's rays are at an acute angle to the earth.<br />
<br />
In addition, very little Vitamin D is produced in latitudes below 35 degrees in individuals who are sedentary and do not have adequate skin exposure to the sun. As you know, most people cover every inch of skin with anti sun (sunscreen), wear hats, long sleeves and long pants.<br />
<b>Did you know?</b> older skin makes very little Vitamin D from the sun.<br />
<br />
Recently I have found studies reviewing Vitamin D3 levels in Finland (<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/28768407/" target="_blank">The Big Vitamin D Mistake</a>), and another in Denmark (<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5880874/" target="_blank">Modulation of the sympathetic nervous system in youngsters by vitamin D supplementation</a>)- 2 countries we know lack sun a good part of the year.<br />
<br />
The Vitamin D Mistake concludes that we need MUCH more D3 than has been recommended for years - more like 8000 IUs.<br />
<br />
The Denmark study is very technical, but i was able to glean some interesting facts. The authors start by connecting circulating vitamin d levels to heart failure (we have known about its benefits for the heart for over 30 years) and showing a relationship with autonomous nervous system in healthy youngsters.<br />
<br />
They began by assessing 25-hydroxyVitaminD levels, assigning some subjects to a group with low levels and a group with normal levels. I figured out that the 10 ug tablet (with calcium) 3x per day was the same as 1200 IU per day. What was interesting is that the group with 'normal' D3 levels did not change much with supplementation. The group that was sub normal did respond well, but after 6 months they had not yet reached the level of the 'normal' group. I am summarizing and simplifying, so please forgive errors. The point is, that reinforces the information from the Finland study - perhaps much more Vitamin D is necessary for health.<br />

General Information: </h4>
Vitamin D3, or cholecalciferol, is produced by the action of ultra violet light (UVB3) in the skin of humans and other vertebrates. Vitamin D2, or ergocalciferol, is derived from plants and fungi. These forms (D2 and D3) are metabolized similarly in humans. However, it is very important to supplement with Vitamin D3 because presently there is no accurate way of measuring Vitamin D blood levels when D2 is used. UVB3 rays do not penetrate the atmosphere in late fall, winter, and early spring. As a consequence, NO Vitamin D is produced by the body at these times in latitudes north of 35 degrees. (Los Angeles, CA to Charlotte, NC) In addition, very little Vitamin D is produced in latitudes below 35 degrees in individuals who are sedentary and do not have adequate skin exposure to the sun. In addition, older skin poorly converts sunlight to vitamin D in the body.<br />

Uses for Vitamin D: </h4>
Studies have shown that higher Vitamin D levels are protective against viral infections, including upper respiratory infections and influenza. Flare ups of COPD and Pneumonia are less common if vitamin D levels are in a higher range. Vitamin D3 can be used at 11,000 IU per day for 7 to 10 days in the event of upper respiratory bacterial or viral infections, including influenza.<br />
<br />
Gastrointestinal disorders of mixing and fat emulsification, decreased transit time, and fat malabsorption reduce vitamin D absorption. We recommend daily doses that overcome these problems. Adults in the US typically consume only 100 to 150 IU of vitamin D daily. Thinning of the skin and reduced sun exposure may contribute to decreased vitamin D3 production in the elderly. For these reasons. <br />
<br />
Vitamin D is used for the prevention or slowing of osteoporosis, the correction of hypocalcemia secondary to hypoparathyroidism, and prevention of hypovitaminosis D. Use Vitamin D for any medical procedure or medication that decreases bowel transit time. Vitamin D insufficiency has been implicated in prostate, breast and 11 other types of cancer. Some of the conditions that Vitamin D plays a key role in preventing or helping are hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain and other autoimmune problems. <br />
<br />
Vitamin D and chronic pain. The Mayo clinic has reported a correlation between vitamin D levels and the amount of narcotic medication by patients with chronic pain. The CDC reports that chronic pain is the leading cause of disability in the US.<br />

When you digest carbohydrates and simple sugars they become glucose. Glucose is the major source of energy for your body. Sugar enters your cells as glucose and is utilized by the action of Insulin. The diagnosis of Diabetes means your glucose (sugar) levels are too high.</h4>

<b>THREE SIMPLE STEPS TO PREVENT DIABETES </b></h4>

<li>The most important step you can take is to minimize or eliminate high carbohydrate foods, like potatoes and sweet (high carbohydrate) foods. This diet may help you maintain insulin levels without injecting insulin. If insulin is needed, it may possible to minimize the daily dose. <i><b>CAUTION - if you are on a daily does of insulin.</b></i> The first day you lower carbohydrates and sugar intake you may experience a decrease in your insulin needs. </li>

<li>Exercise is another important step. The amount of exercise per week that experts recommend is dependent on your age and general health. Exercise also helps you maintain optimal weight and function<br /> </li>

<b>WEIGHT LOSS</b> <br />

Check the label on all manufactured foods. For this purpose the amount of net Carbohydrate is more important than the Calorie count. To check the carbohydrate content of a food (one without a label), visit <a href="http://nutritiondata.self.com/" target="_blank">SelfNutriton</a> and enter the food in the search box. Subtract the fiber from the carbohydrate listing. <br />
<br />
For the purpose of weight loss you need the net carb count to be around 20 gm per day. 40 gm per day is optimal to maintain weight.<br />

Taking these simple steps will lower the glucose impact on the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. This will preserve and perhaps prolong their function. Since the destruction of these cells is not reversible, the sooner you take action <i>the better</i>.<br />

IS DIABETES A PROBLEM?</h4>
Diabetes affects a large part of the population. It affects people of all ages. Many of the young people who are overweight will progress to Type II Diabetes. Type II Diabetes is also associated with the use of many medications, such as Statin drugs. Check with your pharmacist for potential side effects of ANY medication you may be taking. <br />

I have suggestions for foods that satisfy your desire for ‘sweets’. Be
careful with sugar substitutes (as opposed to other sweeteners - like
Stevia). Aspartame is a sugar substitute that is responsible for many

This paper discusses ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. We present useful nutritional information to help you cope with small and large exposures of radiation.

Ionizing radiation consists of particles or electromagnetic waves that are energetic enough to detach electrons from atoms or molecules, thus ionizing them. Its effect is mutagenic. Ionizing radiation is used in medical applications. <br />
<br />
Non-ionizing radiation refers to any type of radiation that does not carry enough energy to ionize. Non-Ionizing radiation can produce burns, but is not mutagenic<br />

Natural background radiation of both types is present everywhere. Some radiation you ignore. Cell phones, microwave ovens, smoking and food are examples. Some radiation exposure can cause potential problems. CAT scans and other radiographic studies, mammograms, dental and bone scan tests are common. In the Beginning ...</h4>
<i>“They”</i> say you are supposed to gather as a happy family to enjoy your meal. I know - that rarely happens. It is difficult to leave worries and disputes at the door. But emotions at mealtime are very important. You can have a dramatic effect on successful digestion with a peaceful setting, a happy or a meditative mood.<br />

<b><i>Do you remember your mother telling you to ‘slow down and chew your food’?</i></b><br />
Chewing your food is the first ‘key’ step in the digestion of food.. Enjoy the textures and aromas presented by food. Chewing mixes food with saliva, which contains enzymes that start carbohydrate digestion. Chewing breaks food into small pieces. This oral phase of digestion, with its smells and tangs, stimulates the stomach and pancreas to prepare for the next step in digestion.<br />
<br />
When you swallow food you keep it in your stomach for an hour or two. A healthy stomach should drop to a pH of about two; it mixes the food with hydrochloric acid and pepsin. The result of this process is called chime. This mixing begins the process of digesting proteins. The carbohydrate digestion that began in the mouth is stopped by the acid. The stomach acid helps defend the body against any unwanted harmful bacteria that arrived with the food. <br />
<br />
After an hour or two the stomach contents feed into the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. Secretions of bicarbonate from the pancreas buffer the acid contents. The pancreas also secretes pancreatic enzymes. These digest carbohydrates, protein and fats. The liver secretes bile salts, which emulsifies the fats to aid in their absorption. The bile salts are stored in the gallbladder until they are needed. <br />
<br />
Peristalsis is a phenomenon whereby the food is propelled along the gastro-intestinal (GI ) tract. The small intestine contains small finger-like projections called villi. Carbohydrates, proteins, water-soluble vitamins, and minerals are absorbed from the GI tract by the villi during this process. The minerals are transported across the GI tract at specific sites, and their absorption is pH dependent. Vitamin D facilitates calcium absorption.<br />
<br />
Fat-soluble nutrients and fat, using the bile salts, are absorbed in the last third of the small intestine, the ilium. Next, everything is propelled into the colon where it is acted upon by intestinal bacteria. Bacteria in the intestines play a major role in the body’s defense. In fact, the normal flora and fauna of the GI tract fulfill many useful functions. Bacteria break down any undigested molecules. GI bacteria stimulate cell growth. They repress the growth of harmful organisms. All of this trains your immune system to respond only to pathogens, and promotes the body’s defense against many diseases. Fluid is absorbed at this stage. The contents are thus concentrated and finally excreted from the body.<br />

... In a nutshell</h4>
A healthy digestive system depends on proper operation at each phase. Yes, proper food choices are important. At the same time, food must be digested and absorbed from the GI tract into the body. Then the products of digestion must be transported to the appropriate working sites (cells). During the next step molecules must be picked up by the cells, used by them and properly exited from them. Debris is next picked up to be excreted. Proper excretion varies, depending on whether debris is exhaled by the lungs, sweated out thru the skin, sent out via urine or excreted from the colon.<br />

<h4>
... when things go wrong (and they probably will)</h4>
You know things can and do go wrong with any and all phases of digestion. What follows is a greatly simplified description of problems and solutions. Are burping, heartburn, flatulence, constipation or diarrhea normal? NO!<br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">What happens when things go wrong?</span></h3>
<br />
People enjoying the typical Western diet are famous for making poor food choices. That is one (very serious) problem. Unfortunately these food choices often include foods which cause GI distress. Older people as a group do not chew well. Busy people have a bad habit of bolting their food as fast as possible. These ‘events’ start a cascade of malfunctions.<br />
<br />
<b>Your Stomach and GERDs</b><br />
Older folks and very allergic people are likely to have very little stomach acid. One consequence of a deficiency of stomach acid is acid reflux. <i>That’s right.</i> Acid reflux or GERDS is more likely a result of too little rather than too much stomach acid. The symptoms of too much and too little stomach acid are identical. There is an easy way for you to test whether you have too much or too little stomach acid. Add 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to an 8 oz glass of water. Sip it with your meal. If you have pain, stop drinking. But, if the small amount of acid helps, you probably are low in hydrochloric acid. Low stomach acid results in food remaining in the stomach well beyond the normal 2 hour stomach-emptying time. When you lay down, the slightly acid stomach contents seep through the sphincter at the top of the stomach and creep up the slightly alkaline esophagus. And that really BURNS. <br />

On August 8, 2013 I had a discussion with Steven Lokken, DC, DABCI, Colorado Springs CO, which I want to share with you.<br />

Dr Lokken had been recommending our Ultra Monolaurin to his patients for about 2 years. He reports great success with a variety of health care problems. As a general rule, he recommends that his patients keep a bottle on the shelf, and at the first sign of a cold or flu symptom, take one or two scoops (1/4 tsp per scoop) that day and continue until symptoms are gone. In a day or two the symptoms are usually gone.<br />

He has recommended it for sinus problems and general immune support. He has found that low white blood cell count respond to 3-4 scoops per day. How about Eat Fat - Lose Fat?</h3>
A number of recent studies show that by eating products that contain coconut you can lose weight. It seems to help control insulin resistance in type II Diabetes. When Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA) are in the diet they are preferentially utilized. They usually occur as monoglycerides or triglycerides. They also increase the utilization of the long chain triglycerides - as are found in belly fat (and other places where there is unwanted fat). Ps. This effect was specifically referenced in the studies.<br />

How can coconut do that, you may ask? This is because of the MCFAs in Coconut oil. The crystals in Ultra Monolaurin are made from coconut oil, so they contain the same MCFAs: Monolaurin and its vital medium-chain fatty acid companions, Monomyristin, Monocaprin and Monocaprylin.<br />

Let me pause here and comment that adding MCFAs to the diet does NOT replace the need for the essential, <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-618-ultra-omega-linic-best-omega-blend.aspx"> <b>PRE</b>formed, polyunsaturated long chain fatty acids</a>. Ultra Omega-Linic is still required to fulfill the need the body has for these ESSENTIAL fatty acids. In fact, some of the MCFA studies showed poor results BECAUSE the EFAs were omitted from the diet. What IF?</h3>
What if there was an oil you could use for your daily cooking needs that would protect you from problems like heart disease or Alzheimer's? What if that oil would improve your digestion, strengthen your immune system, protect you from infectious diseases, and help you lose excess weight? And, by the way, you could improve your exercise, too. Would you be interested? That oil exists. It is pure extra Virgin cold pressed Coconut oil.<br />

What is less clear is how much to take! We have, as stated above, substituted coconut oil and coconut products for as much of our daily cooking and eating needs as possible. We also take Ultra Monolaurin. One study we found was using the equivalent of about 10 scoops per day. Each scoop of Ultra Monolaurin provides 750 mg monolaurin. So about 2 ½ tsp equals about 22 grams of MCFAs. I presume how much you might take depends on the severity of your problem and how much coconut oil is being consumed. <br />

Begin the use Coconut oil and/or Ultra Monolaurin slowly as there is the possibility of a reaction to the die-off of unwanted organisms. Many of the articles address stomach upset, but the response may be any one of a variety of symptoms. Increase the amount used per day as symptoms subside.<br />
To sum up our recommendations: 2 Ultra Vites per day, 2-4 Ultra Omega-Linic (or more, depending on the needs of the body) and a minimum of 1 scoop – up to perhaps 10 scoops per day <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/p-666-learn-about-monolaurin-benefits-here.aspx" target="_blank">Ultra Monolaurin</a> (while substituting coconut oil and coconut products for daily cooking and eating needs)<br />

In the 1960's, while serving as Flight Surgeon at the SAC base, Mt Home, ID, we kept our pilots at 'flying weight' using what was laughingly known as 'the drinking man's diet'. The pilots could drink straight booze and eat steak, but had to avoid potatoes and other high carb foods and drink upon pain of exceeding their optimal weight. Overweight meant they could be grounded!<br />

<i>Dr Atkins was right!</i> </h3>
At the time, Dr Atkins had not achieved his later notoriety - but the principles of low carbohydrate intake, which he researched & promoted, are as valid today as they were then. The low carbohydrate dietary recommendations precede by YEARS the 'fat-is-bad-for-you' dogma. In fact, this juicy bit of mis-information accounts for many of today's health problems. Problems like <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/topic.aspx?name=alzheimers" target="_blank">Alzheimer's, Senile Dementia</a>, <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/topic.aspx?name=Diabetes" target="_blank">Diabetes</a> & weight control (you know about the obesity epidemic), Epilepsy and Heart Disease. The metabolic consequence of a high-carb diet, are controlled poorly or not at all by pharmaceuticals.<br />

A Quote from a BLOG on Atkins.com by Colette Heimowitz; "..a low-carb diet by any other name is still a low-carb diet." In fact, when the body does not have carbohydrates to burn for energy, it burns fat. It is that simple. Ps - the end result is more ketones for performance.<br />

So this morning i had a Facebook posting referencing 'News about Coconut Oil Saturated Fat' (BAD!) Saying you should replace it with 'healthier fats'. I was reminded of this article from 2002 - "<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2002/07/07/magazine/what-if-it-s-all-been-a-big-fat-lie.html" target="_blank">What if it has all been a big fat lie?</a>". I just HAVE to share it with you :).<br />

<a href="http://coconutoil.com/big-pharma-and-mainstream-media-attack-coconut-oil-with-mis-information/" target="_blank">Here is a rebuttal</a> to the American Heart Association warning -> avoid saturated fats (and you may know that coconut oil is a saturated fat) - "The AHA’s recommendation clearly contradicts <a href="http://coconutoil.com/peer_reviewed/" target="_blank">research that exists</a> on not only coconut oil but saturated fats in general, which debunks the old lipid theory of heart disease that saturated fat and cholesterol cause heart disease." What I like are all the references with the article.<br />

Various authors, including me, have written reams about the benefits of the low carb approach. I affectionately call it the <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/topic.aspx?name=lowCarb" target="_blank">Low Carbohydrate Lifestyle modification</a> (as compared with the typical Western Diet). Others claim great success using the low glycemic index information. The current catch-phrase is the 'ketogenic diet'. These diets all have one thing in common - they encourage protein and <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/topic.aspx?name=fats" target="_blank">fat-rich</a> foods, and limit carbohydrate intake. The key is to determine which foods are high in carbohydrates (and those which dramatically raise blood sugar and insulin levels) - and to AVOID them, or at least dramatically limit them. The objective is to provide the body with lots of ketones rather than glucose.<br />
<br />
I like to (laughingly) point out that carbs are the way ranchers fatten their cattle for market.<br />

While there is a lot of information available about the sugar content of foods, especially processed and package foods, we tend to forget that carbohydrates in the body become glucose (... sugar by any other name). While modern labeling of manufactured food requires a listing of the sugar content, most folks look at the calorie content and skip over the carbohydrate listing. A healthy person should have an intake of about 40 grams of carbs per day. What is true is that when man became man he was a hunter-gatherer, not a farmer-reaper. Carnivores and Omnivores (meat eaters and eat-anything-ers) have brains which function differently from the brains of herbivores. To tell the truth, the human body - the brain in particular - much prefers ketones to work well. Recently scientists have defined a type <a href="http://nutritionpureandsimple.com/topic.aspx?name=alzheimers" target="_blank">III Diabetes</a>, a condition where the brain no longer can use glucose to produce insulin in the brain. As you can imagine, this inability to use glucose causes all sorts of neurologic malfunctions.<br />

It covers recent research to treat epileptic seizures. Four diets are compared: The Typical American (or Western) diet, The Atkins diet, a Classic ketogenic diet 4:1, and the MCT (medium chain triglyceride) diet. ps: triglycerides are also fatty acids. pps: The MCT diet yields more ketones per unit of energy.<br />
